I had a cat once. He was an efficient mouser. I traded him food and shelter in exchange for his rodent extermination services.

My wife and I have watched a lot of really, really good movies recently, including The Witch (2015), The Green Room (2015), Swiss Army Man (2016), Paddington (2014), and Stalker (1979).

Last night, we made a conscious decision to break our streak with 47 Ronin (2013). It did not disappoint(?). It is a singularly strange, deeply flawed, big budget studio film that, at the end of the day, is a modestly entertaining swords-and-sorcery film in a far-east setting. It is at times, somewhat intelligent, and at others, aggressively dumb. (Apparently, every time someone uses a Japanese term - like seppuku - the script called for them to give it a short definition.) It has all the historical accuracy, style, and gravitas as a game in the Samurai Shodown series, and all of the characters speak English with extremely varying degrees of proficiency. Nonetheless - and despite the presence of ogres, dragons, tengus, witches, and other supernatural beings - the story actually doesn't stray that much from the legend of the 47 Ronin, and its ending is pretty daring for a big-budget studio film. It has some decent action sequences - the sequence on the Dutch island is particularly entertaining - but it drags at times and is a bit overlong. Nonetheless, I ended up enjoying it for what it was - again, a swords-and-sorcery movie with an interesting setting - and despite its obvious flaws, I recommend it to fans of the genre with low expectations. (That's a pretty lukewarm recommendation, but its a lot more than the movie got from most critics!)

So in short, as a fan of other 47 ronin movie versions...should I watch it?

1979 Stalker is one of my all time favorite films. No matter how many times I watch it, I always find something new. It had a very interesting creation history as well. If you've never read up on all the turmoils the production entailed, and the ensuing aftermath, definitely do so.

finally watched Age Of Ultron. I liked the first Avengers more, but this one was really fun. Spader as Ultron? Hilarious. Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch? Adorable! And when Vision showed up, my mind was blown. I had no idea he had been introduced to the MCU.

So does that mean you're finally caught up to Civil War?

Yes. It is a hot mess of a movie that is both terrible and entertaining at the same time...like Final Sacrifice, Girl with the Gold Boots, Cave Dwellers, and some of the other movies at the heart of the very best MST3K episodes.

Stalker was fantastic, and I have read a lot about the production since I watched it. It is really a fantastic movie, and while I am not sure I enjoyed it as much as Tarkovsky's Solaris, it may be the better film. I am still working on its meaning a bit, and I think that I will get more out of it the next time I watch it.

yes and no. I've still not seen Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 & 3, or Thor: Dark World. But having seen everything else I don't feel like I *have* to watch those before finally seeing Civil War.

They're all fun super hero romps, but there nothing here you ABSOLUTELY have to see before Civil War.
