I do prefer 2D Zelda to 3D Zelda. But here's my thoughts on the 3D Zeldas...
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-When I first played this back in 1998 I wasn't all that impressed with it outside its graphics. Many years later I returned and beat the entire game. Overall I thought it was pretty good, like 8/10 good, but it's far from flawless. IIRC Sarge sent me a copy of the 3DS version of this (if it wasn't him, it was somebody on this forum) and I plan to replay it via 3DS someday as that version may iron out the kinks finally.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
-Still haven't played this after all these years, though I own the 3DS version now.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
-I'm pretty sure my disdain for this abomination is well known around these parts now. So I'll refrain from bashing it yet again.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
-I beat this back in 2007, and had a good time. There are some annoying bits sure, but they are brief in the grand scheme of things. I actually liked Midna, amazing dungeons, and being a wolf was cool. Overall I loved this game and I think it's the best 3D Zelda made so far. 9/10 for me.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
-I enjoyed the art style and flying aesthetic. Game design was far too rigid for my liking, motion combat wasn't much of an improvement over just pushing a button, and there are repetitive sections for padding which I didn't appreciate. I don't think this is a bad Zelda game, but it wasn't good enough to keep my attention at the time. I may revisit it someday.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
-Obviously I haven't played this yet, but to say it excites me would be a lie, from what I've seen so far. Nintendo made this one open world in a modern sense, parkour traversal, added collecting and crafting, cooking, map trackable sidequests, equipment breakage, and other gameplay elements copped from myriad current (read: tired) WRPG design. It could also be that I'm admittedly worn out on Zelda in general. But hey the shield sledding looks fun.

I wonder what the stats are on how often entire franchise Zelda discussions pop up on this forum...

'Tweren't me!
That was my take as well back when I played it. Good, but not great. Something about the 3DS version, though, just brought it up a huge notch in my mind. It has to be the overall smoothness of both the controls and visuals that the remake brought in, because it's otherwise mostly unchanged.

Kind of shocking to hear, but I'm an OoT fanboy I guess. Like, was there something else you guys had in the back of your mind you compared it to, that it didn't measure up to? Sometimes just sounds like some of you guys a little older have a stronger affinity to the 2D games... but I also grew up on Zelda 1, 2, LttP, and LA before OoT dropped. I think OoT was the most expensive game I ever bought with my own allowance up to that point, still have it CIB and it's the gold edition. It was one of the most atmospheric games I had played back then, really sunk into another world with it and I've gone back to it several times and still love it. It's still my favorite 3D Zelda game because its design is more in line with LttP and the originals... it's all about the dungeons, combat, and puzzles. It's simple and that's what I love about it. With Majora's Mask / Minish Cap and on the series started to rely more heavily on fetch quests and NPC's.

For one thing I'd already been playing 3D action-RPG games via PC for a while before Ocarina came out. Like playing The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard a whole month before Ocarina. I also played Mega Man Legends a few months before Ocarina, which I honestly think is a better game than Ocarina, despite being in the same vein.

Everytime I look back on Legends 1, it looks fairly dated, lol. It's on my PSX backlog though, I'm a lot more familiar with 2 which I loved (and is one of the most regrettable trade ins of my life. Thankfully I think it's on the PSN now though).
The full and entire extent of PC gaming for me in the 90's is:
Doom / Duke 3D Shareware
Jedi Knight
Frogger 3D
Need for Speed III (ran like crap)
Starcraft
Total Annihilation
Family computer could barely handle these and intense SNES games via ZSNES like Seikden Densetsu 3.

Yeah I had a decent PC so I played a lot of stuff.
Redguard was very cutting edge when it came out. It's hard to find trailers of high quality, but here's a shitty quality one to give you an idea:

Some gameplay:

Remember this released a little before Ocarina. Quite advanced for its time. I never did beat it, maybe I should rectify that.

I played Daggerfall before OOT, but still think OOT is a good game. I will never consider it the best game of all time, that would have to be Tetris.

Yeah, A Link to the Past.
Occarina of Time doesn't measure up to A Link to the Past.
A Link to the Past is superior in every way, except for those people who think that 3D > 2D in all circumstances.
The story is better, the gameplay is better, the controls are better/smoother, the art style is better, the dungeons are better, and the combat is better (sorry, "z-targeting" and waiting for the obvious "kick me" sign to appear on the enemy's ass does not equal good combat).
OoT's annoys the fuck out of the player with Navi, has an empty and lifeless overworld, and the end of the story is a convoluted, headache inducing, bad anime time-travel nightmare.
OoT is responsible for the Split Timeline.
Fuck the Split Timeline.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I've loved Zelda games my whole life. I love the world, characters, artwork, and music. But I've never finished a Zelda game. I suck at games that involve puzzles and exploration. I always get stuck not knowing what to do or where to go. Then I play other games for a while. Months later I go back to Zelda and have no clue what I'm supposed to be doing.
