probably because you have the Revision mod on Steam that I just found. It says you have it.

I do, but I played it no problem just vanilla before Revision came out.

weird. The Revision works/saves just fine for me though. Too bad I feel like I hate this game.

maybe Hobie never left. Maybe he absorbed noise. Think about it... noise used to play console games, didn't watch superhero movies... I've said too much.

I've been replaying FEAR 1 and 2 over the last week or so. Simply cannot put into words how much I still absolutely love these two and how much I absolutely despise FEAR 3. I start fuming just by thinking about it. Such a disastrous fall from grace.

FEAR 1 is still my favorite and probably the best FPS of its time next to Half-Life 2. I could maybe throw Doom 3 in here for the cool setting, sound design, etc, it's still fun, but ... if we're talking combat both Half-Life 2 and FEAR destroy it. Currently I have no idea how I'd pick a favorite between FEAR and Half-Life 2, damn that would be so hard and painful. I love how FEAR feels kind of like an interesting crossroads in FPS design though. It's more corridors and in ways maybe more comparable to Half-Life 1, but with a lot of dramatic advancements and still to this day it has some of the best enemy AI all around. Sure, they sometimes just stand out there in a funny game-like way, but for the most part it's utterly impressive how they maneuver the levels, spot your flashlight, communicate with their squad, flank you, etc and so forth. Every single bullet packs so much punch behind it both at enemies and against you, tiny mistakes can get you killed easily. It's consistently exciting with every encounter. Amazing that a 2005 FPS still has some of the most exhilarating combat in the entire genre. I also like how in ways it feels like it was solely designed for PC. Hard to explain, but I ran through Condemned again as well and playing them back to back, you can kind of tell Condemned was made for consoles in mind, and FEAR for PC's. Condemned is still excellent as well, but it did feel like a B-team thing to me playing them back to back like this. I actually played both on the 360 a lot back in the day, so this is the first I'm playing them on PC. Nice to experience them again in 1080p/60FPS.

So easy for me to burn through FEAR 1-2 in a few sessions. FEAR retains its place in my heart as one of the best FPS's of all time.

I dabbled into Serious Sam HD, the First and Second Encounters, and Serious Sam 2 over the last two days or so. Put about an hour into each. I like Serious Sam, but it never really clicks for me. I see people always compare it to Doom or some old stuff, but I don't get that vibe at all. There is nothing interesting about the levels for the most part and the shotguns suck, the spread and piercing damage seems way too weak. I'm probably just too obsessed with Doom. I have that issue with any game like these... I'd rather just play more Doom and new megawads.

I played a lot of the First Encounter back on the 360, I don't think I ever beat it though. That's the other issue, although the games technically don't seem super long or anything, they feel like they go on forever. I also hate how much the early levels drag. It makes sense mechanically to slowly introduce you to new enemies and weapons one at a time, but it just takes forever to get to the goods.

Might consider them done. But I have been wanting some slightly aimless stuff to play to listen to some podcasts lately. I might replay some Red Faction next haha.

Serious Sam 2 seems cooler than I remembered and has more interesting levels and it feels a bit more new to me, since I don't remember it as much or the enemy roster. If I do stick with one it might be that one. I definitely like these more than Serious Sam 3.

I'm trying to burn through some stuff on my Steam list, but the Doom itch is getting severe. I feel like if I jump into another new megawad, it's game over for other games, lol. I guess it is about that time anyways... been hitting up Doom like twice a year thesedays it feels like.

Did you get that 90% off deal for the package on Steam? Hard to believe it's regularly $100. Also unfortunate they only have 1.1 and 1.2 (the encounters) only on GOG. I made it through 1.1 a year or two ago. It took me a while to warm up to the "arena" concept but it's good for mindless shooting fun. It's a lot better if you attempt to find the secrets in each level. Who uses the shotguns in that game? It's about the rockets, the laser, and the CANNONBALLS!

Now Serious Sam Advance on the other hand, sloppy as heck graphics but not really bad.

Now then, onto my current FPS Projects List, thanks to the recent Steam Sale.

Currently playing:

Bioshock (Remastered) - made it farther than my physical disc playthrough which crashed just before Fort Frolic, now at Hephaestus.

Also just started:

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 - snatched it at Steam, beat the physical version of #1 a couple years back. Liking it so far, it was described as a sequel and a prequel, now we can see what's bugging Gabe Novak.

Sniper Ghost Warrior - uses the same engine as Call of Juarez Bound In Blood, I can tell because of the introductory screens in black and white and upside down (a Windows 8/10 bug as it is widely reported), but the game plays fine. Not bad. Has some cool bullet cams like in Silent Scope EX.

Rambo - Not really an FPS, more like an arcade-y rail shooter, but has a first person perspective. Not as bad as the reviews claim.

So that's what I'm doing, I also have Doom II on the back burner somewhere, it's been a year since I touched that, I think I'm halfway through. More FPS in 2017!

Yeah I saw the crazy Serious Sam discounts, I grabbed Serious Sam 2 for $1. lol, so I definitely can't complain for that. I already owned The First and Second Encounters (HD) from another sale and had 3 for awhile. I actually think I bought 3 for $5 awhile back and probably paid that or like $2.50 for First/Second Encounters.

Yeah I'll admit they seem fun enough for some aimless fun while listening to podcasts or something. I played more of The Second Encounter since my last post there. So I might keep chipping away at them. Gets more fun when you start getting more weapons and the enemy hordes are more mixed.

Overall I don't love Serious Sam, but I can't really knock it either.
