Who else gets made fun of for being a video game geek?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I'll tell you what, I can assure you that I'm having way more fun on a M,T,W,T and Sun night playing games than the average nongamer. I for one embrace my inner geek and never hide it. I'm proud of who I am and love my hobby and people who don't like or understand can go fuck themselves. Never hide who you are.

I've had this debate with normies many times. In the end, its not worth arguing. All I can do is try to understand and accept how getting wasted and puking is more fun for some kinds of people than games are.

Also, @ Mozgus, I actually really relate to what you were saying in that blog. I used to hide my geekdom when I was younger, because I was afraid people would make me feel lame about it. As I've gotten older, I've found that the people I know are very understanding of it. Alot of it is because I'm just a generally very nice and funny person (I'm also very modest, which makes me kind of embarrassed to type things like that). I dunno... I love video games, literature, politics, hardcore punk, scientific theory, social studies, and generally learning, and I don't smoke, drink, or watch any sport until it gets to the playoffs, other than hockey. The thing is that I don't discriminate against people who like that stuff at all... I just don't do them.

I guess, surprisingly enough, people in Nashville, Tennessee are pretty open-minded. Sorry it has to be that way in Kansas, bro.

After reading what I wrote back in 2007, I'm surprised how much my stance has changed. I was still pretty indifferent about it back then. Nowadays I carry much more of an aggressive attitude about it. Maybe my internet troll persona is carrying over.

Same to all that. I can still get along with anyone as long as they respect me, which a few of them do.

But it's funny how things work out. I just bought a geforce 8800gt real cheap on craigslist to do some SLI in my new rig, and the guy calls me up later that night making sure it worked out for me. We wound up gabbing like a couple school girls for an hour about specs and shit, which then turned into much of whats being said in this thread. There really is no place around here for geeks to find each other. Normal people have bars.

Bro-love.

I guess I can relate to Mozgus. From about probably 1st to 8th grade I was as insecure as anybody could possibly be. I wouldnt go to school sometimes just because I felt like everybody was staring at me and knew my secret (being a total geek in Middle School sucks). But over the last year or 2 ive just decided to say fuck it and if people dont like me then they can rot in a hole. Now ive stopped wearing those stupid itchy contacts, cut my hair to a decent length, and wear clothes that dont say "im a fratboy, go me!" all over them. I look like a complete computer nerd, which I now realize i would take any day over the long haired, pervy assed, pretty boy and/or drunk and stoned look that everybody my age seems to think is cool. While everything else is "gay". Also in response to your story about the women I couldn't help but find that halarious. There are several people that I know that should have had that fate but the only person on the planet that I was able to laugh in the face was this whiny obnoxious skater kid that had been bothering me since I was around 10 and I just punched that fucker right square in the jaw. Knocked out 1 of his front teeth too. We had to pay the dental bill but it was still so worth it. I would do it again.

I would probably get jailed for child abuse if my son ever did something like this. Saying that you would do it again seems very immature, considering that your parents probably had to foot the bill. Please tell me your dad whipped the shit out of you when he received that bill.

As to the topic at hand, you guys are pretty much the only gaming conversation I have. Not that I'm ashamed of gaming or anything. I'm just not very vocal regarding anything in real life because I've always felt that 90% of conversations consist of people waiting for their turn to speak - as opposed to actually listening and exchanging ideas - so usually most folks aren't even interested in what anyone else has to say anyways. It's just a waste of breath most of the time. I've found that it's entirely possible to converse with others and still manage to say almost nothing at all, thus leaving that person feeling validated/satisfied and still managing not to share any personal information about myself.

The most talking I ever do is at band practice during songwriting. Being the only guy who even remotely knows music theory can be kinda frustrating at times; and I've unintentionally (and somewhat unwillingly) become the main songwriter because of it. I'm usually hoarse by the time practice is over, and I feel like a frickin' dictator at times. But oh well... At least they listen...

Original_Name wrote:I almost never get made fun of for being a video game geek, although people do find my devotion to older games a bit confusing.

"Hey, Logan! Have you played Gears of War 2?"

"No, I don't have an Xbox 360. Have you played it? Is it any good? How's the story?"

"Oh, no Xbox 360. Does that mean you have a PS3 or Wii?"

"Actually, I don't have either. My girlfriend has a Wii, though. So about the only new games I've played are Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl, and Twilight Princess, but that was actually on the Gamecube, so--"

"Wait, I thought you played games alot."

"Oh, I do! All the time! But I mostly play the older ones. Genesis, Super Nintendo, PlayStation, Dreamcast-- that kinda stuff."

"But why? Those things are ancient!"

"Well it's like... instead of just liking music from this year, most people like music all the way back to the 60's, maybe even all the way back to classical. It's the same thing with games, y'know?"

"No it's not. Video games constantly improve. How good music is doesn't really depend on when it was made."

"The only thing that's really improved is graphics. Which are awesome, mind you, but they're not incredibly important. I pay attention to story-telling, imagination, and immersion. Plus my favorite company was Sega, and they're not really the same company they used to be, so it gets me less motivated about newer consoles."

"Dude, Sega sucks! That's why they don't make consoles anymore. Why do you like them? I'm glad Nintendo killed them!"

--Whole new can of worms.

But people for real ask me to bring my Dreamcast with me when my friends are hanging out all the time. A guy literally kissed me on the cheek when he saw that I'd brought Soul Calibur once.

So yeah, people really love Soul Calibur, House of the Dead 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Sega Rally 2, Dead or Alive 2, Outtrigger, Guilty Gear X, Ooga Booga, Confidential Mission, Under Defeat, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Daytona USA 2001, Metropolis Street Racer, Rez, Ikaruga, Power Stone 2, Cosmic Smash, and Crazy Taxi.

Yeah... I apologize for making this post so long. Sorry, Racketboy's bandwidth!!
Exactly the same thing here man. It honesty sickens me how hypocritical and cynical most people are when it comes to old tech.

You would have thought he would whip the hell out of me but he knew the kid as well as the parents and he said before this ever happened that the kid AND parents deserved a punch to the face...

Same here as well most people in my HS look at me like I'm some kind of retarded douche bag who can't understand why bitching and moaning about how myspace is kickass, drugs are cool, downloading mp3's on limewire is bitchin', that I should get a cell phone & break it so I can make my mom buy me a 'better' model, go get high, go skateboarding on busy downtown sidewalks knocking people down and bitching when they ban skateboarders from downtown, and being a general asshole to everybody and everything is fun.

Also I didn't mention, Is it just me or would you be pissed if a 'friend' of yours begged you to sell him your spare SNES only for you to see him light a string of firecrackers shove them in the cart port and throw it out the back door before you can stop him. Not necessary to say he wasn't walking very straight the next time anybody saw him (You'd be surprised how hard you can hit somebody in the nuts with a piece of broken SNES).

Along those same lines though it just pisses me off when my co-workers at GameStop look at me like I'm a self absorbed jackass when I buy retro games off of customers who come in trying to sell their stuff or when I buy retro compilations, because apparently they all know what progress means and I'm some brain dead analog stone age caveman.
