Mayflash Dolphinbar

Post by Anapan »

Thinking of picking a couple of these up - they're quite cheap:

Anyone have experience with one? Apparently you can even use it on an Android device, so my Nvidia Shield TV could be playing Wii and Gamecube games at 1080p. Also easy pairing of Wiimote for emulated Lightgun games on PC would be cool.

I'm not familiar with this particular Mayflash model, but I know a thing or two about wii sensor bars. The Nintendo wii sensor bar does not literally sense anything. All the sensing is done by the wii remote. The wii "sensor bar" is simply just a dual infrared emitter. You can buy battery powered third party "sensor bars" from the usual 3rd party suspects like pelican and mad catz. All they have to do is emit two points of IR light.

Coincidentally, you can experiment with other sources of IR light. The wii remote will pick up IR signals from a couple of old IR remote controls if you hold down one of the buttons. The wii remote can also pick up IR light from a pair of candles because fire emits IR light.

The wii remote communicates via bluetooth. If you want the wii remote to communicate with your computer, you will need a bluetooth adapter. Some laptops come with bluetooth built in. You can also buy a cheap-o $7 usb bluetooth dongle.

I suspect that this Mayflash model is simply using the USB cable to power the twin IR emitters, not actually communicating any data with the wii remote. If Mayflash is REALLY pushing things, they may consider bundling in a 2-in-1 bluetooth dongle and IR emitter, but I would not expect that.

I knew about the Infrared LEDs being simply powered - I never use my Wii without a better battery-powered emitter, but this appears to be more...

From the description it mentions firmware updates. It appears to have different profiles - one emulates keyboard & mouse for non-compatible games and systems and one allows true complete connection of wiimotes to be used in Dolphin with correct detection of which peripheral (Nunchuck, MotionPlus, classic, etc) is attached. It's also cool that it can make a temporary sync and permanent sync of 1-4 Wiimotes.

The Android port of Dolphin mentions that this device is the correct way to pair a Wiimote for use in the port.

Well at this price, I'm just gonna order two. Even if it is just to save me having to reconfigure controls for different peripherals in Dolphin in the future.

Sounds like it includes Bluetooth capabilities in the bar, so no separate dongle. Seems like a decent piece of kit.

So it IS a 2-in-1 bluetooth dongle and IR emitter. I did not expect that. How cool!
