The "things" at the end of the chapters are what flesh out the characters in Watchmen and make it something different than you typical graphic novel. They show scholastic essays written by Nite Owl, police reports on various superheroes, and parts of the biographies of the main characters.
Having not read that portion of the story alone, I can see why you don't think much of Watchmen. However, I believe that to be an extremely essential part to the entire process.
Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
So are you done? You're just ganna nibble on the one cookie I threw your way, and call it? You're going to sit there and place all your chips on the bullshit optional document theory? Right. Sure. That's where all the good stuff is. Hidden in those documents. That must be it. Mystery fucking solved. Let it be known henceforth that the documents contain all that is good with Watchmen, whereas the rest of the pages, what with all those silly curved lines and color filled shapes, yes those were just filler. They were the bloat of the story. There certainly weren't there to a tell a tale, or entertain the user, no sir.Lanfear wrote:The "things" at the end of the chapters are what flesh out the characters in Watchmen and make it something different than you typical graphic novel. No seriously, leave.
Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
No. You asked for specifics and that was all I really had to respond to at that point.
You use the word "optional". That made me laugh. It's akin to calling chapters of a novel optional based on whether or not you want to read them.
At the end of the day, you haven't read the novel. You watched portions of it, and skipped some of the things that made Watchmen unique, and are now claiming to have an intelligent opinion about it.

So you refer to the main story as "portions" then?Lanfear wrote:No. You asked for specifics and that was all I really had to respond to at that point.

That's like saying you can't form an opinion about a Final Fantasy game because you didn't do all the side quests.
Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
Wow, you actually called it a novel. You think some little comic book.... is a novel. You think it made you smarter, don't you? You think you accomplished something by reading it, like you deserve a prize? respect? recognition? You are part of an elite group who successfully read a fucking comic book. I see. It's all becoming clear now. Congratulations.Lanfear wrote:No. You asked for specifics and that was all I really had to respond to at that point.

I aspire to be like you some day. Maybe I can go back and retake 4th grade English, so I can TRULY experience Watchmen in text form, because I must admit, I relied on the motion comic as a crutch. You see, I'm double omega retarded. I have terrible reading and writing skills, among other deficiencies. In fact, this and all my posts are typed by an assistant, who surveys me and gauges my opinions through a selection of flash cards and gummi bears. Blue gummi bears show lack of interest, while red gummis tell her I'm enraged. Green ones indicate tranquility, while yellow ones mean I need to go tinkle. Orange ones, well...those are naughty. Assistant lady says I'm not to talk about the orange ones.
Or like saying you don't know the story of Resident Evil because you didn't bother reading the notes and documents you pickup.Flak Beard wrote:That's like saying you can't form an opinion about a Final Fantasy game because you didn't do all the side quests.

No. It's nothing like that. Your misinformed to compare it to that. Some of the end of chapter pieces are 4 pages of solid text about the characters. To claim that it is a "side-quest" is wrong.
I understand your sentiment Mozgus. I really really do. And in some ways I'm definitely elitist. This forum is almost dedicated to elitist videogamers though if you think about it.
I don't think Watchmen was that incredible. I haven't read many comic books/graphic novels(whatever you'd like to call them. I don't mind either)
Did I learn something from Watchmen? No. I can't say I did. I was hoping to. I went in hoping to learn something because everyone said it was so good. But you haven't finished it yet. Flesh out your opinion by reading those sections.

Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
Fact is, if the comic in any way fueled a desire to read them, I would have. But it didn't. The comic didn't throw any hooks out to you. It sustained itself without them. They are extraneous material and nothing more.Lanfear wrote:Did I learn something from Watchmen? No. I can't say I did. I was hoping to. Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
I was simply comparing it as extraneous material for it's respective medium. It fleshes out the experience a little more, but is not essentially necessary to enjoy or form an opinion about said game or comic in this case.Lanfear wrote:No. It's nothing like that. Re: Anybody else excited about The Watchmen?
What the hell is the watchmen? LOL just kidding but seriously, for 2 guys that both say they only thought it was OK, Moz and Lanfear just need to calm it down.

I will die alone? Thats a good one bro. You are a moderator of a fucking video game website forum. Before you go acusing other people of being a looser or a fanboy, why dont you sit down and take a good hard look at what you do for your free time, making sure people behave themselves on a video game forum. Yes that is something that will get you lots of real world relationships for the rest of your life. Grow up. Then you accuse me of opinion bashing, but have no tolerance for any one elses opinion but your own.
You maybe viewed 10-15 seconds of each panel watching that stupid ass animated comic. Don't try and tell me you got the full experience of being able to take in all the art and combine it with the dialogue to get a better understanding of the story. You took it at a very face value level, its as simple as that. its like watching some one playing a videogame and having them narrate the story for you, and then judging it saying '' this game is so mediocre''. You didn't experience the game the way the creators intended simple as that.
What really proves your opinion is completely off the wall is that you claim watchmen to be the best comic adaptation of a film, but had no rebuttle to Sin City, a movie that was worked on by the original creator, and stayed so close to the source material they used the graphic novel as story boards. Then you go on to bash graphic novels as a medium of art, further showing you have no real appreciation for it as an art form. If watchmen is so mediocre (which is fucking bullshit, this comic was lauded by the industry, and brought a revolution in the way comic storys are told, paving the way for more adult themed stories in comics)why don't you enlighten us with your opinion on what a good graphic novel is? What would you consider one that is genre defining? Maybe a particular artist you think is so much more talented than Dave Gibbons? The fact of the matter is you probably cant, you were just spewing your own fanboy biased opinion, and telling everyone else they were wrong and you were right.
