What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Heh, Raw Deal was the last of the Arnold 80s movies I had to track down. The driving shootout in the gravel pits to Satisfaction was the high point for me. It's ridiculous cheese that I ate up with a spoon. You see Red Heat yet? It's a freaking MASTERPIECE.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Nope lol, that's one of the last ones I need to hit up. Looks promising. I'm a bit iffy on the Conan movies too, it's been awhile on those. Red Sonja too, which sounds like the worst.Ack wrote:Heh, Raw Deal was the last of the Arnold 80s movies I had to track down. I'm not very versed on his 90's stuff which probably aren't as good as the 80's I'm assuming. The 6th Day I saw but that was forever ago. True Lies I'm not sure. Eraser, Collateral Damage, and End of Days I've never seen.
His newer stuff looks pretty fun, like Sabotage and Escape Plan. I've seen The Last Stand which was pretty awesome. He's a badass small town sheriff. Also the weirder zombie film (I think) Maggie looks cool, supposedly has one of his most serious acting roles.
Oh yeah, I love how in Commando Arnold shoots the main villain four times with a shotgun. FOUR TIMES WITH A SHOTGUN. I'm guessing Doomguy was based off Commando.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Dude, you gotta see Red Heat and the rest of his 80s output. Of his sword and sorcery work, the best is Conan the Barbarian. It's well worth watching, both as a highlight in Arnold's career but also as the best of the sword and sorcery subgenre of fantasy films(which is actually saying something comparatively, because many body builders who went into motion pictures ended up in this genre. Arnold really is the best). It's actually my favorite movie...which says a lot about me I suppose. Conan the Destroyer isn't nearly as good, at least in part because they made it more kid-friendly. Red Sonja is really bad. I recommend drinking heavily while watching it.
For Arnold's 90s work, the high points for me are 1990's Total Recall and Kindergarten Cop, 1991's Terminator 2, and 1994's True Lies. Eraser is...ok. Its straight-faced action along with CG crocodiles. I have some friends who adore Last Action Hero, though it's been years since I watched it. I remember not being that impressed. End of Days isn't nearly as goofy as the majority of his movies, but I always felt like it was a nice change of pace in his career after doing the likes of Jingle All the Way and Batman and Robin(and before that Junior and Eraser). It also gave me one of my favorite jokes about Arnold(he's been crucified more times than Jesus).
In the 2000s his output dropped off due to him running for governor, so more of his movie roles were just cameos. I thought the 6th Day was ok, but I actually really liked Collateral Damage. The later Terminator films are not so great in my opinion.
Once he left office and the 2010s started up, we got The Expendables series, which I loved. The Last Stand and Escape Plan were both enjoyable in my opinion. Not his best, but definitely getting back up there. I have yet to see Terminator Genisys or Maggie. Maggie interests me a lot though.
Going the other direction, his one 1960s movie(Hercules Goes to New York) is bad. Like incredibly bad. Like z-grade trash bad. You get to see him wrestle a man in a cheap bear suit in Central Park though. I've only seen one of his 1970s roles, and that was a bit part in The Long Goodbye. He takes off his pants. Seriously. The rest of that decade, I couldn't say.
Is this a good time to say I'm a definite fan?

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
No shame man. His 80's output is a kind of movie and thing I miss thesedays, a lost art. I guess The Rock is maybe the modern day superhuman action hero guy but I have no idea and none of his stuff really interests me (this coming from a huge fan of his wrestling days). Though I do want to zoom through the rest of the Fast & Furious series since those seem cool.
Conan, as in your favorite movie of all time? haha. I've seen them but it's been a decade or something, so it'll be like a fresh experience. One thing is for certain though, I know the OST is amazing. I think I stumbled upon the composer and OST a lot more recently thesedays because the guy was friends with Jerry Goldsmith I think, one of my favorites. Might just be easy to say all those 80's and action movies he did have amazing soundtracks.
Terminator is an unfortunate series. I might even be of the unpopular opinion that favors T1 over T2 (the kid sucks ass, and good guy Arnold is kind of boring). Each time I watch T1 it gets better and better, but T2 bores me at times. That said it's still a classic and was just totally downhill from there. I downloaded Terminator Genisys awhile back and it was pretty dreadful, SyFy C-tier original level stuff, but you probably could have figured. Old Arnold T800 was cool, but he couldn't save the rest.
I've seen Expendables 1-2 and enjoyed them. Kind of a shame I think they went for PG-13 for 3? I'll check it out sometime though, probably won't really bug me.
Jingle All the Way is one I don't think I'd care to revisit, but I dug Kindergarten Cop and could maybe go through Twins/Junior again haha.

Total Recall has some of my favorite Arnold one liners.

Now that one is one of my favorites. 5/5.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I remember the first time I saw that movie. I had no idea what was going on because I tuned in partway through in time to watch him pull a giant glowing orb out of his nose. I stayed for the rest and loved every minute of it.
The Rock is pretty much the closest you'll get. You shouldn't discount his stuff though, he's actually a great actor, and his character in the Fast and the Furious series is actually my favorite. In fact I'd say in general I didn't care for the series until he popped up in it. I haven't seen nearly as much of his filmography as I have Arnold's, but what I have seen, I've enjoyed.
So then if we're all such fans of Arnold, dare I ask, what is the general opinion of Stallone?

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
True Lies is one of my favorites for sure. I also love any of his off-beat comedy stuff. Kindergarten Cop and Jingle All the Way are a blast. And there's no question T2: Judgment Day is the best of that series, and probably will be forever.
I agree with the assessment on Dwayne Johnson. He's filling that Arnold role quite well, and I love that he's doing so. I still need to see Central Intelligence, my brother said it was absolutely hilarious, and we have very similar taste in movies.
I was joking through most of Fast 5 (that's the first one he's in, right?) that he was so bulked up he probably couldn't even reach to his back.

Even in war, there remains hints of humanity. A coming-of-age tale of a group of former child soldiers clearing the mines off Danish beaches.

You should watch The Rundown. It is Dwayne Johnson's best/most fun film, and there is an amazing Arnold cameo at the beginning where he passes the "muscled action hero" torch. I loved it.Sarge wrote:I agree with the assessment on Dwayne Johnson. He's filling that Arnold role quite well, and I love that he's doing so.
