Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Lately I've been trying to transition to digital on the single-player entries of easily emulatable consoles (basically emulating anything that isn't enhanced by actual-couch co-op). Sometimes it's easy to justify, but other times it's just harder to kick that habit of BUYING stuff. Like, it's easy to justify not buying an American release of Tales of Destiny, because it's like 100 bucks. BUT when the Japanese version is only 10 bucks, it's a lot harder to justify to myself that it's not worth just owning it to have it.
Decisions about pointless things that come at the interesection of "Collector" and "Cheap Bastard" are hard, is what I'm trying to get at here ;p

Objectively, that'd be true for any company. Making a game exclusive to any platform - even Windows - limits the audience and potential sales. Multi-platform would raise costs though, which might not be offset by additional units sold.noiseredux wrote:To be clear I am just saying it would benefit Nintendo and gamers alike if hardware exclusives weren't a thing. Their games sell great. I think they would sell even better if they had to stop convincing folks to buy new hardware to play them. Just my thought.
I'd say Nintendo is less concerned with hardware, and more focused on control. Owning the hardware platform suits that goal.
At the same time, Nintendo is a publicly traded company. While they might have cash reserves, their investors aren't going to be happy to see them bleeding money for years on end. Not saying they'd quite pull a Konami...but there's likely a limit to their ability to just keep on doing what they do that'd run out well before the cash does.exonerator wrote: People need to realize that Nintendo's not going to sink any time soon. Even if they release several lackluster systems in a row, their war chest from the Wii's success will protect the company from failure for a very long time.

Nintendo's investors are gonna be happy about how well Pokemon GO did. But then come next share holder meeting, the hard questions about dedicated handheld validity are gonna start pouring in.isiolia wrote:Nintendo is a publicly traded company. This is a fair point that I tend to overlook. Yeah.isiolia wrote: Multi-platform would raise costs though, which might not be offset by additional units sold.
I agree 100%, and I think purposely over-simplify my thoughts by saying they care about hardware. But yeah, it's all about control and that's Nintendo in a nutshell since the NES days.I'd say Nintendo is less concerned with hardware, and more focused on control.

Considering the weird space between handheld and console state the NX will apparently fill, I'd say concerns about dedicated handheld validity have already been brought up at some point.Exhuminator wrote:Nintendo's investors are gonna be happy about how well Pokemon GO did. Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
In various Nintendo share holding meetings I've read in the past few years, investors are always bringing up smartphone gaming as an important thing. Pokemon GO will add a lot of fuel to their fire. As for the NX handheld, until we know concrete things about its design and implementation, I'm just gonna sit out making any assumptions based on speculation.PartridgeSenpai wrote:Considering the weird space between handheld and console state the NX will apparently fill, I'd say concerns about dedicated handheld validity have already been brought up at some point.
