Generally, games that just waste my time. Games with LONG unskippable cutscenes before tough bosses (FFX), games with lots of, or massive amounts of game time based upon, merciless grinding (Izuna 1), games that hide the final FINAL endings behind neigh unachievable S-ranks (Asura's Wrath), games that hide endings and even extra stages behind higher difficulties (Contra 4), games that have too many QTE's (especially button mashing ones) (TellTale games).
I even enjoy all (save Izuna) of the above games mentioned. There's just some stuff that makes me just scream "WHYYYYY?!" because of how annoying to the player it is.

Throw me into that one. Games that drag for the sake of adding time to the clock. Vague sure, but think about it. Take Dragon Quest or other RPGs that tick in at that 40-120hour type clock. Did it really need to? Were all the sub quests, optional other fluff, tiering of the XP and GP doling out so cheap you're forced to grind hours on end each town you hit really all that necessary? Or the other extreme of like DK64, re-running the same areas time and again 5x over with each Kong to 'clear' the game plus an overworld map that was epic in size that even had teleports to cut some time off moving around...a 100+hour game easily done in 20 otherwise. Crap like that infuriates me, it's time wasting. I like it when a game gets to the point, the story rolls around if one is needed, or the elements of the game just keep a good flow (whether fast or slow) that just makes sense through to completion. I don't need fluff, I don't need a shitty boss run for hours at the back end of an adventure, action, or RPG game.
I tend to almost unanimously across the board quit and move along from games that do this and I can't recall the last RPG I took over the 40 hour mark, let alone any game that wasn't some online stuff like Guild Wars or something fun to poke at like Civilization or Sim City 1 or 2000.
A second one I detest -- ranks. Fuck you developers. It's not hard to see in most case these are not developed by people fresh to the game, but by the testers who have 100s if not a 1000 hours on a game and know it like rote memorization and if you the gamer want to get that S or A rank you better damn well commit that much too. Often those dumb ranks lock out stages, special people/cars/gear, a 'best' ending or some other crap and it's just offensive and annoying. And yes, this does play into my bitch above of dragging a game out too far. Hey look it's a 10 hours game, let's rank that sucker, lock something of solid use up and get a 100 out of it. NO. I've had games that do rank that I would have bought, found out it did this, and then never did and I feel not in the least bad or any form of a loss over it.

I agree with the time wasting. It's why I don't play as many JRPGs as I'd like to - so often, I feel like I'm wasting countless hours mindlessly grinding. Even in games I LOVE, I complain about that. Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei IV, and Persona 4 are great examples - I LOVED all four of those games, but I felt like they had a needless amount of grinding. Or maybe I'm just bad at games. Idk. Probably a mix of the two.

My tolerance for sheer grinding has really diminished over the years. These days if I'm playing a grind heavy game, I'm gonna be watching a TV show in tandem.

I usually have Classic Game Room or Metal Jesus going on my laptop while I grind.

I still think I have some tolerance for it when I'm really in the mood. I still think it's insane a few summers ago I beat FFII (PSP, new run), FFIII (NES), FFIV (PSP), and FFV (GBA, new run) all back to back and had a blast. FFIV is just about the only one there that's mostly linear and may only require a little grinding near the end for the final boss, but those others were pure dungeon crawling.

I've got to be in bed, with the tv, or stuck somewhere like a plane, train, or a car. I sold SMT4 last year and it was very enjoyable, up until I got into larger parts of Japan and it really spread out as the grinding was insufferable so I ditched it. My favorite RPG of the 90s was(is) Final Fantasy 2 on the SNES(aka 4 GBA etc) and I'm not even certain I could sit and play that so easily anymore and I can kill that in under 20 hours. With the time I have left, less with a small child around, I've got near zero tolerance for bullshit anymore in video games, web forum fighting douchebags, and lots of other garbage people here could easily relate to.
I was all hopped up for over a year to get the Bravely Default Second Layer game, then it came out, and I still haven't bothered to even give it a glance let alone a consideration. And I'm wondering if all my interest in DQ7 and 8 on 3DS is just piss and vinegar at this rate as those games are the king of bloat and time wasting crap that muddles some fine adventuring.

Bravely Second isn't too too bad in terms of grinding. There's some that needs to be done, but in the grand scheme of JRPGs, it's one of the lighter ones.

Fragems wrote:Oh and another which is rare but I've seen in a few games. Console games with no aim assist I used to hate aim assist thinking it was cheap. However Quantum Theory changed my opinion about that still don't know how I managed to finish that game, but I'm glad that I did since I'll never have a reason to touch it again. Still not the biggest fan of aim assist but definitely any console FPS/TPS needs some form of aim assist if they expect you to use a controller.
A console-based FPS without some form of aim assist feels like having a Nerf crossbow fight in the middle of a downhill office chair race.

Always hated it when friends complain that i use the same moves in fighting games. Personally if its in the game its fair play.
