Here's one: Everyone supports online harrasment.
No matter where you go, people only condemn it when others do it, when they do it, it's different because it's "justified". There's a thread in NeoGAF where a guy says that "I'm a firm believer in freedom of speech, but there are some things that you should get beat up for" and people agreed.
Everyone is like that. People on forums, the gaming press, Gamergate, anti-harrasment peeps. There's this idea that only evil people approve of harrasment, but the everyone in gaming does if it's "for the right reason". People who don't are a rarity and one of the reasons I like it so much here.
I have actually written an article around 1000 words long about this, but I'm scared of being the target of a mob or, worse, Gawker/Kotaku/VICE so yeah, I'm not sure I want to publish it :/

I know, I know. But what I mean is that mentality is widespread in gaming, including forums.Xeogred wrote:There's a problem...Erik_Twice wrote:There's a thread in NeoGAF![]()

I totally agree. This is one of the only gaming forums I've been on that isn't as toxic as my cooking. It's why I'm not nearly as active on Neo-Geo.com's forums as I'd like to be; it becomes an awfully toxic, judgmental environment really quickly. Ask one question that got asked in a different post three years ago, and you've got twelve people saying "USE THE SEARCH BAR FAGGOT." A bit off-putting.Erik_Twice wrote:Here's one: Everyone supports online harrasment.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Racketboy has a lot of mature discussion yes, because the intrinsic nature of this forum attracts actual grown ups. The above average maturity level is the biggest reason I've stuck around here for as long as I have.
The down side is, the older we all get, the less there are of us who still care enough about the hobby to fervently talk on forums about it.
So I guess that leads me into an unpopular gaming opinion...
I'm only a few years from 40 years old and I still love video games. The guys I know my age in real life only care about fishing, hunting, golf, watching football, and barbecuing. Apparently the majority of people in their late 30's do not care about gaming and see it as something infantile at best. I'd have thought there would have been a societal shift about this medium by now, but no, not yet. So choosing to game at my age is apparently an unpopular opinion.

I don't really think that's the case.Erik_Twice wrote: Everyone is like that. People on forums, the gaming press, Gamergate, anti-harrasment peeps. People approve of appropriate consequences, which is something harassment doesn't tend to qualify as.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Most people are incredibly dull and wholly lacking in intellectual curiosity. This is a frequent topic of discussion with my wife. We know many (incredibly dull) people whose "hobby" is watching sports on television. That is, literally, the only thing they do besides eat, sleep, work, and (maybe) exercise. They read only periodicals and popular fiction; they do not travel; they do not undertake any sort of projects; they eat the same seven meals repeatedly; they do not engage in any sort of critical thinking; and they have absolutely no appreciation of art in any medium.Exhuminator wrote:Apparently, the majority of people in their late 30's do not care about gaming and see it as something infantile at best. I am glad that I am not one of those people, and I do not enjoy associating with them (not because they are bad, but because they are so painfully boring).

Appropiate consequences as decided by a mob of angry people on Twitter really don't seem different from harrasment to meisiolia wrote:I don't really think that's the case.
