Like, can we watch whichever ones we might find at yard sales in whatever order we find them or do we *need* to watch them in release order to really get them? I'm guessing that numbered installments (like the Ironman ones) are sort of chronologically necessary, but maybe the other ones are less so?

You will have much more fun with the MCU flicks if you watch them all in release order.

It varies. The Fox stuff is mostly contained within its singular series, so the X-Men stuff can be watched in order, but if you want to watch the Fantastic Four movies, there aren't specific points where the two tie in together. X-Men is by far the more involved series, though titles like X-Men Origins: Wolverine can be left out or viewed whenever. Hell, you could also watch X-Men: First Class at any point before X-Men: Days of Future Past, because First Class is technically an alternate timeline up until DoFP. After that though, it's best to view in release order. Deadpool is also a jumping off point, because it was Fox in cahoots with Marvel, so it got to use mutants but might also serve as a connecting point for mutants and Deadpool to the Marvel line. The Fantastic Four movies...well, the 2005 one has its sequel, but beyond that, don't worry about it.

The Punisher movies are all pretty much their own thing and can be viewed in any order separately. Man-Thing is the same way. The early 2000s Hulk movie is also on its own.

Also, I misspoke earlier. The Spider-Man films were handled by Columbia, which is owned by Sony. The Spider-Man films are still entirely separate from the Amazing Spider-Man films though. Marvel is planning on starting up their own Spider-Man film series, though they'll be skipping the origin story apparently.

Anyway, as for the official Marvel Cinematic Universe films, they pretty much have to be viewed in release order with a couple of exceptions as of this moment. The 2008 Incredible Hulk movie is part of it but doesn't really get referenced much. You could skip it. And Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't directly connect yet, though it will in the future at some point, likely whenever they finally get around to Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, which is where all of this is heading.

The "new" MCU really began in 2008 with The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. Hulk didn't (AFAIK) lay any future groundwork, really, but Iron Man did. While the movies do tie together, they don't always do so directly. Like Age of Ultron really does feel like a relatively immediate sequel to The Avengers, and it acknowledges some of the events of the other movies that happened in-between, but not very well. Most of the tie-in stuff comes from characters being in each others' films, shared elements (Infinity Gems [sorry, stones now]), and the post-credits scenes that foreshadows bits of the larger universe.

If you didn't see Guardians of the Galaxy...watch that one As mentioned, it basically doesn't connect to any of the others outside of setting up the Infinity War stuff, and it's just plain fun.

yeah I hear great things about it, though I'm not familiar with the comics. I hear the recent Avengers is awesome, too. I actually am pretty interested to see that Wolverine spine-off also, as I forgot that Reynolds did Deadpool there first.

Anyway, I just got word a movie store near me is closing and purging inventory. I might have to swing by and see what they got for Marvel movies along w/ Ninja Turtles cartoons, RE CGI movies, and Alien mockbusters...

The Deadpool in Wolverine: Origins is not the same as the Deadpool movie. You should not have any expectations of it being similar or you will be very disappointed.

You don't need any prior knowledge of the comics to enjoy Guardians ... or really any of the comicbook movies.

EDIT: Also, I believe Netflix just signed a contract to get a bunch of Disney movies on their service, so this may include a lot of those Marvel movies you're wanting to watch.

Relatively few people would be (for Guardians), which works well for that movie. You don't need to know anything going in. It has a lot of the snappy dialogue and all that Deadpool had...just tamer

Age of Ultron was okay, but might be hard to just jump into. I'd definitely go with watching some of the older releases first, then the first (and better) Avengers movie, before that one. Iron Man was the first of "phase one" there, and is a solid film in its own right.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was not good, and the Deadpool in that wasn't really Deadpool (the new movie makes fun of it). The more recent The Wolverine was like...75% good. It kinda just went off the rails toward the end.

Anyway, I'll probably keep an eye out at yard sales and such and maybe hit up that movie store I mentioned. So most likely I'll be watching whichever movies I happen upon. But, I'm sure with numbered movies (like the Ironman ones) I'll make the effort to keep em chronological.
