Coming here and having everyone just losing their shit over the various guns or friendly fire or all these little touches and then hearing stuff like the Idle Thumbs podcast raving about even the intro to the game or how smoothly it runs on modest hardware... I don't know, there's an enthusiasm that you don't often see surrounding single player FPS games as much these days. Almost reminds me of the era of OG Doom shareware and gushing over some secret you found with friends at a Junior High lunch table. In a good way.
The newest Game Informer podcast kind of had an interesting topic that fits alongside this. That this level of organic hype and excitement in the medium is somewhat rare thesedays. They were moreso talking about how Uncharted 4 feels like it could be one of the last games of its type in terms of critical acclaim and appeal, citing that Metal Gear Solid V was kind of the last one that had all this critical acclaim behind it (both rightfully so, Uncharted 4 sounds amazing and I'm not even a huge fan of the series). Both Blockbusters but with a lot of quality behind their design and gameplay too.
I can't really summarize what they said very well, but I think it's just telling how fast paced our world has become and how the AAA market has changed a lot. Big releases seem to sneak in and drop quieter thesedays than before. Even compared to how the medium was just 10 years ago when it was still very mainstream by that point, it's interesting to see how different things are now.
I don't know if that makes any sense but yeah haha, everyone is loving it for the most part and I too am excited to see it rewarded with well deserved excitement. I loved the Wolfenstein reboot too, but like this even way more. Now there's rumors of them rebooting Quake and I would be all for that as well. People can rag on id for sticking to their few IP's, but I don't find it very insulting when this is Doom 4. If this were Activision, EA, or Ubisoft, this would have been Doom 45 by this point. It doesn't hurt to keep a franchise going if they still release some quality installments, even if they're years or even decades apart.
