Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I watched Ghostbusters II this weekend with my wife. She had watched the first one with one of our kids while I was working and asked if we had the second one. I said, "Well ... no, but that's partly a conscious decision because the sequel is absolute ballz." "Really!?" she says, "that's my favorite one! I love the ending where (*see spoiler)"
Yes, I really dislike Ghostbusters II. Fight me. All the same, my interest was somewhat piqued because I recently read an interesting article on Deadspin about the dude who played Vigo the Carpathian (turns out he was a bit of an asshat!) so I kinda wanted to watch it again in light of this new insight into the actor Norbert Gruppe.

So in some ways this movie was slightly better than I remember. The performances are fine, I guess, and it's fun to see the Ghostbusters eking out a living by means of alternate employment following their heyday in the original film. The problem with this movie, IMO, is that holy crap is it a mess in terms of pacing and plot structure. Seriously it's more like a series of loosely interconnected vignettes involving the Ghostbusters that are somehow supposed to magically be combined into a coherent plot. Well then as now, this magic is lost on me apparently. Sorry Ghostbusters, we'll always have the first film to hold on to (and for whatever it's worth my wife still really loves "that one scene at the end").

That scene involves an NES Advantage. Thus, it is awesome.

LOL, YES! I'm not sure how I didn't remember that from previous viewings, but I won't lie it did help to vindicate the film to some small incremental degree.MrPopo wrote:That scene involves an NES Advantage. Thus, it is awesome.

I agree with your assessment that the movie ends up being more of a series of interesting scenes that they strung together, rather than a properly written plot, but I still think it had a lot of charm to it. Peter MacNicol was awesome in it (and then went on to be similarly awesome in Dracula, Dead and Loving It) and the movie does have a lot of really great gags.

Saw "They Look Like People" with my SO the other day. Just picked it out on a whim on Netflix with no prior knowledge at all, and was very presently surprised.
It's a BRILLIANT thriller (I'd hesitate to call it horror, but I suppose it is?) about a man with schizophrenia. I don't really wanna rave too much because it would be spoilers, but I can highly recommend it if you have an hour and a half to kill (only 79 minutes) and want something different.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I like Ghostbusters 2 but it's mostly out of nostalgia. The film's got its problems, mainly going out of its way to be more kid-friendly and retreading much of the first movie almost beat for beat while being much less clever (a lesson Sony apparently hasn't learned with the new one coming out).
As a kid I liked all the silly stuff that happens in the second half, as an adult I prefer the first half of the movie. Most of the funniest bits come from the "getting the band back together" scenes. Some of the most memorable Egon lines come from the early scenes in 2.
I can still watch it and have fun but it doesn't hold up like the first one which only got better as I got older.

Since I recently reread The Hellbound Heart (and since I have some time to kill before I go do some work for my uncle), I decided to revisit:

At a pawn shop this morning, I found a brand new copy of this:
http://www.amazon.com/TCM-Greatest-Clas ... B002945DUW
for only $1. I am so happy! (I love two of these movies; I like Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde; and I am excited to see House of Wax.) I also got a brand new Friday the 13th/Friday the 13th Part 2 DVD combo pack, a brand new copy of The Birds, and a brand new copy of Psycho. All of them were $1. There were a lot more horror movies there, and I may go back and stock up on movies for October!
Also, I found a brand new copy of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 (PS3) for $3. I passed on it.
