Re: Most impressive arcade port on the snes?
Yeah, I know, but I'm just saying, you don't have to, you know?

Ya Understood. There was a ton of arcade ports for the snes so i tried to post as many as possible so people who saw this post could be reminded what else was out there as far as ports.

it was a good port, yes. but they dropped a ton of animation frames and the game felt really sluggish, even on the turbo setting. it is a technical achievement more than an arcade perfect port.corn619 wrote: Also Street Fighter Alpha 2 is a terrific port as well.
still, if you had no access to an arcade, a ps1, or a saturn then the snes port was the way to go.

Yes, I think people conflate a port making the most of the system and an accurate port. When I think about an "impressive port", I have in mind a title that recreates accurately the arcade experience.
Sure, it was incredible that they managed to pull off SFA2 on the SNES, but it's not a great version compared to the original. Similarly, Final Fight might make the most out of the limitations of the SNES (though I doubt it, comparing it to other titles with better and seemingly more complex ports), but it's not great compared to the arcade game.

The SNES usually hid loading screens and just delayed a screen for a few seconds. The SNES CPU has some wait state issues when it loads data from the cartridge in LO-ROM mode in that it must be halted to pull data. Usually this just means a couple or 3 second wait. I don't think HI-ROMS have this problem.NeoRage wrote:It was a good port, although it was odd to see a loading screen on an SNES game.My pick I think is street fighter alpha 2 on snes on most impressive port simply cause they sorta pulled it off. I mean come on really who thought capcom was even gonna try to port it on the system.
With SFA2, the data was compressed. It was probably a HI-ROM, though, so it was likely the decompression.
I don't think the Genesis or TG-16 had any problems loading from ROMs. And once HI-ROMS became cheaper for manufacturers the SNES ceased having that problem, too.
I'd argue the original Street Fighter 2. That was a VERY close experience at the time, and people were blown away.jfrost wrote:Yes, I think people conflate a port making the most of the system and an accurate port. I was impressed w/ the SFII port at the time but once i got used to it i'd nit pick that it wasn't anywhere close to arcade perfect.
