It's a shame the overhyped "difficulty" has soured some of you guys on it. That's how desensitized these newer generations have become. You might die a few times at a boss or something. So what? You adapt and you the player learn from your experience and try new things to conquer it. That's very satisfying and these games are very doable. The philosophy and design of these games feel like NES logic to me, and that's the brilliance to them. They are 110% purely gameplay driven and basically dungeon crawlers with one of the best combat systems ever, so I highly disagree on the complaints for the controls. They are obtuse, but I find that games that have their own weird control mechanics end up being some of the best usually.
They have absolutely nothing on Zelda II and many other legit insanely hard games.
Don't let the tough factor turn you off. They just aren't boring, pandering, and hand holding like God of War and so forth.
@Gunstar Green - As I've enjoyed saying for years, Dark Souls is essentially EVERYTHING modern 3D Castlevania should have been. Toss in some CV BGM, replace some enemies with Medusa Heads, throw in a whip, and it's an S+ rank game. Literally the only thing that would need to change is a visual face lift.
If you already like it, it only gets better. I'm envious since you now have a multitude of these games waiting for you to dive into.
Not only my favorite games of last gen, but some of my favorite games period. The replay value is off the charts.

I have an unpopular gaming opinion.
Every time I hear people praise stuff in a Souls game, all I can think is King's Field already did that years ago, and probably did it better.

PLAY KING'S FIELD.

You're right, the viewing perspective changes nothing.

Thing is, isn't souls done by the same company and thus shouldn't you like it to since I know you loved that KF series...

Do you know what site you're on? Most of us are well-versed in difficult games old and new. Some just don't care for the game. You liked the controls, I didn't. The world didn't grab me at all but for many it will.

Seriously, most all of us here have played and beaten ridiculously hard games.
So those us who game more for story than anything else aren't real gamers? That's kind of the vibe I'm getting here - that because I don't play a game for ball-breaking challenge and don't particularly enjoy that, I'm somehow "desensitized"? That's bullshit, and you know it.

Going to have to agree with that. Unless I'm in the mood I don't want something that's likely to piss me off due to being excessively hard either by being cheap and stupid or by good design. When I want something mean I'll pull a game out like that and do it, but because I avoid them most the time now due to limited time doesn't make me desensitized, it makes me more smart in not wasting my time getting little to no progress/satisfaction with it.

Exactly. I've beaten all four games in the Battletoads series. I've beaten Zelda II. I've beaten the original TMNT. I've beaten Mega Man and Ghosts and Goblins. A large number of members here have beaten at least one of those, too. Everyone here can beat these ridiculously hard games, but that doesn't mean that we all enjoy it as much as less challenging games, and that's okay. It's like Tanooki so perfectly said - it doesn't make us desensitized; it makes us smart with our time. Being a teacher, I work 50 to 60 hours per week plus try to keep my house looking nice and socializing with friends. If I put in the time required to "get gud" at Dark Souls and beat it, I'd be playing that and nothing but for a few months probably. That would be frustrating, no matter how much I enjoyed the game, and become a chore. I would experience as many games as I do now (I've beaten 43 games during the 99 days so far of 2016). That's not to say that sinking that time into Dark Souls to learn the game and beat is bad, but it IS to say that not wanting to do that isn't bad, either.

Not even the metroidvania aspect? Does Demon's or Dark Souls do that better than King's Field IV did?
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
