My wife and I have been on a pretty big 90's horror kick lately. Actually 90's movies in general, really. But especially horror.

I was about 13 when I first saw The Lawnmower Man. And I loved it. I mean it had video games and nudity, so...

Of course after seeing it I read the short story and couldn't figure out why the only thing it had in common with the movie was that there was a lawnmower in each. But whatever. Much has been said and hated about this movie. And plenty of it deserved. But it was still mostly enjoyable to revisit this one. Towards the end it really drags. It seems like a good 20 pages could have been chopped off the script. But I love seeing what 1992 people thought VR would do - especially juxtaposed against the VR craze right now. Plus that blonde is still foxy.

I saw the Shawshank Redemption recently.

What I have to say is not going to be groundbreaking as the movie is highly rated in databases and lists etc.

It is one of the top movies I remember watching.

ZOOTOPIA
I took my girl to see Disney's Zootopia last night.

Wow. It's hard to know where to begin. To say that this was a good movie, isn't saying enough. There's myriad different angles to look at here. I'm going to try to touch on a few of them. I'm going to tell you about Zootopia with regards to production values, race, politics, and sex.

Visually, Zootopia is flat-out, undeniably gorgeous. The character designs are almost too good (more on that later). The textures are among the most impressive use of texture in any CGI movie made to date. From the woven fabric in the animals clothes, to the metal and cement textures of the city, to the elaborate textures of the endless variety of different fur, Zootopia never fails to impress. Each species has a different type of fur. sheeps' wool is a different texture from polar bear fur, which is a different texture from the mayoral lion's mane, et cetera.

The set design really stands out too. Each type of animal has a different ecosystem within zootopia such as tundra and rainforest. Fans will surely get a kick out of the rodent ecosystem - a tiny town with miniature everything and interconnected hamster tubes between sky-rise buildings. These different ecosystems are fascinating, but lead to a de-facto segregation.

This kind of segregation is just one aspect to the racial tension at the heart of the conflict in Zootopia. In a sense, it's kind of brilliant. By taking the human element out of the discussion and applying race to funny animal cartoons, the film makers can start a discussion about race without inciting anger. Zootopia is a melting pot of every animal species living in a single land. Despite all their progress, the animals of zootopia still harbor unspoken sentiments of racism. Does this sound familiar to you? Zootopia lays down a lot of racial issues in the guise of funny talking animals including times when the altruistic rabbit protagonist explains to the flamboyant leopard that bunnies are allowed to call other bunnies, "cute" but it's not okay for other animals to call them, "cute". In another scene, the same rabbit is mortified when her fox partner reached out to touch a sheep's woolly afro. "You can't just touch a sheep's wool!" Despite her commitment to positivity and political correctness, this same rabbit accidentally implies that predatory animals are genetically inclined to go savage and start attacking prey animals at a press conference. This illustrates how racism doesn't always come from intentional hatefulness, but sometimes from deep rooted prejudices we don't even realize are within us.

These racial issues come to bear when political leaders seek to utilize tensions between predator and prey species for their own political advantage. The smooth-talking mayoral lion detains wild predators without a warrant to prevent the news from leaking to the public. When the seemingly meek sheep takes power, she explains that prey animals outnumber predators by ten to one. She unites a base of prey animals by spreading fear of a "common enemy" within Zootopia's population. Are things getting a little heavy here for a Disney flick?

Perhaps the most un-disney aspect of Zootopia is sex. The main characters are a naive bunny rabbit with exaggerated round hips and her "partner" a sly fox with sharp teeth. They investigate a mystery by visiting a nudist resort and questioning a naked elephant yoga instructor. Shakira plays a gazelle pop star with long legs in a mini skirt and a bare midriff. She is surrounded by a quartet of bare-chested tigers in ripped shorts with bedroom eyes. Disney is playing less coy than ever about furries and their anthro-rule34-loving fandom. This isn't just me imagining things, by the way. Disney is actively trying to market this towards furries. A cursory google search turned up this email:
Hello Furlife,

My name is [name redacted] and I am representing Walt Disney Studios. Our next film being released is ZOOTOPIA and it is about a world inhabited by animals all living in peace together. The pictures of the members of your group all looking like animals are incredible and align perfectly with the film. All of you could live peacefully in Zootopia. It would be great for you all to share these photos on social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter. You can take new photos of each other and share these new photos online using the hashtags #Zootopia and #ZooU. You can be representing ZOOTOPIA and the participants can receive film based items such as the poster and rabbit or fox crowns. This can be a lot of fun and your group seems perfect to participate. If you are interested start posting the photos today and email me at [email protected]. Thanks!

So what do we have after all this? A Disney movie with amazing production values about race, politics, and sex. It's an amazing feat that scriptwriter Jared Bush was able to touch on all these subjects and still make a family-friendly film. In fact, Zootopia is such a good movie, that this will be a tool parents and teachers use in the future to teach children about race.

Date Night and my wife wanted to watch Aladdin. She's got a bit of a cold and Disney comforts her. Still holds up. Still funny. Enjoyed it. Probably been whatever - 20 years since I've seen it.

Loved it. Awesome '80s-style action film (though not in the same "so-'80s-it-hurts" style of "Kung Fury").

Not terrible for an indie scifi effort, but it's been done better before, but the writing is where it suffered the most, not the budget.

This is such a disappointing movie. You have a great location, a nice cast of actors including Bill Murry, what must have been a substantial budget, and a over dramatic snooze fest of a story. This isn't a bad movie, but it isn't that good either. There is one scene I really loved between Bradley Cooper and John Krasinski that is great. but other then that the rest of the film is pretty bland.
