Re: RPG Progress Report
I'm about halfway through Dandy: Zeuon No Fukkatsu on the Famicom Disk System.
The history behind this one is pretty interesting. The original Dandy is Western in origin. It's a computer dungeon-crawler that served as inspiration for Gauntlet.
The FDS Dandy really can't be considered a port of any kind - it's a completely reworked game designed with Japanese audiences in mind. It plays like a mixture of Hydlide and Zelda: small overworld and linear dungeons, an emphasis on grinding - but with heart containers, upgradeable weapons/armor, and animated sword combat.
It's much better than Hydlide but way worse than Zelda. Go figure.
Dandy (the original one) has a sequel called Dark Chambers for the Atari 2600, 7800, and 8-bit family of computers. I'll certainly check that one out when I have a chance.

I'm really looking forward to diving into King's Field. I plan on hitting them all up in order though. That fourth game isn't super-expensive but it's a little pricier than I prefer (isn't everything?). I'll keep an eye out at my local shops.
EDIT: Dandy is done. Looks like I was more like 75% of the way finished when I made this posting. Short game overall. Five-ish hours?

Pokemon Yellow: Up to saffron gym....but man my level 34-36 pokemon stand no chance against her. I beat the first no problem somehow but the rest knocks me out when they do their heavy hitting moves. I feel like i need to grind but there's not many places left with what I "can" reach. And I don't think what I can reach will push me close enough to beat her. This is almost as bad as gen 2's normal gym....the horror XD

Sabrina is one of the toughest gyms in yellow. You don't need to beat her for ages though, she doesn't enable any HMs. Progress with the game and come back later on - Koga and Blaine are both easier.darsparx wrote:Pokemon Yellow: Up to saffron gym....but man my level 34-36 pokemon stand no chance against her. Anyhow:
The people have spoken, and so tonight, I started up Dragon Warrior for NES.
Some thoughts - Wow, this is grindy XD. I mean, I knew it would be, but I don't really even know what to do yet, I've just been grinding until I can get to the next town, buy the next item I want etc. I know I need to find 3 magical macguffins that Erdrick entrusted to people but not what those ae or who has them yet
Anyhow, progress for today. I bought some startig equipment, and then grinded to level 6 and bought all the best stuff from the town near the main castle.
Then I walked to the town in the northwest, and grinded on enemies to the south to buy an axe and some chainmail.
I've visited a town in the northeast, but not a lot seems to be going on there and I'm not grinding 3000 gold for the armour they're selling - enemies only give like 9 gold a time.
I've seen a cave to the west of the main castle. Tomorrow's plan is to explore that. I'm level 8, with the Hand Axe, Chain Mail and Small Shield equipped. Hopefully I'll survive OK.

Yeah, it doesn't help that special is a single stat for both attack and defense in the first gen and there are no actual attacks that are super effective against psychic.alienjesus wrote:Sabrina is one of the toughest gyms in yellow. Re: RPG Progress Report
FYI - I'm not exaggerating when I say 75% of the game is grinding. Trying to move on ahead without sufficient grinding can end badly.alienjesus wrote: The people have spoken, and so tonight, I started up Dragon Warrior for NES.

Dungeons are tiny but poorly lit.
Good luck.

Yeah you're not kidding...funny thing is the last time I got this far I remember skipping to fushcia now but still. i've got to stop winging it with my teams(I usually go for a fire, water, and grass, and fill in the other three with other types that might help...). I think I might try to find something in safari zone and see what that does, there's got to be one I could swap that would be better than my gengar(don't want to swap out evee just yet...)MrPopo wrote:Yeah, it doesn't help that special is a single stat for both attack and defense in the first gen and there are no actual attacks that are super effective against psychic.alienjesus wrote:Sabrina is one of the toughest gyms in yellow. Get a Tauros. It's a candidate for one of the best Pokémon in the game. Other good physical options include Persian and Snorlax.darsparx wrote: Yeah you're not kidding...funny thing is the last time I got this far I remember skipping to fushcia now but still. i've got to stop winging it with my teams(I usually go for a fire, water, and grass, and fill in the other three with other types that might help...). All of the games best special attackers are Psychic types - Alakazam, Starmie, Exeggutor, Slowbro and Jynx are all fantastic. Gengar is pretty good too, but he won't help at all against Sabrina!
Zapdos is also one of the best in the entire game - with drill peck and thunderbolt he can take on everything in the game except Golem and Rhydon.

Re: RPG Progress Report
I've got about 2.5 hours in Crimson Shroud for 3DS right now. Glancing at a walkthrough's table of contents, it appears I am halfway through the game already. I'm at the point now where a random item drop will determine if I continue or not, hopefully I will have good luck on this and not be stuck. Despite the idiocy of that design decision, I have loved the hell outta Crimson Shroud so far.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
