It was in the seventh gen that WRPGs finally got the technology and design streamlining needed to become mainstream compatible. This is when Bethesda and Bioware caught that zeitgeist and hit their stride. Though I think comparing modern WRPGs and classic WRPGs is to compare very different beasts.
Before the seachange of the Infinity Engine, WRPGs were often generally quite challenging to get into from an interface perspective. And since nearly all of them were a blank slate world for the player, it was harder to remain focused and engaged to the very end. The amount of freedom could often be overwhelming. I'm looking at you Darklands. And you too over there, Daggerfall.
Getting into the WRPG VS JRPG differences debate is always worth talking about, but I won't be the one to roll that snowball here.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Guess I was kind of wondering if you guys had any suggestions, for some 3rd/4th gen WRPG's that feel more comparable to Japanese developed stuff.
But that said, I could just play more JRPG's. Still haven't really touched the Dragon Quest series actually.

Xeo - get on GOG and get Albion.
And for the love of all that is holy hit up some Dragon Quest.

I'd be down with it, I just feel like there is a plethora of those games right now, I'd play XCOM2 instead.noiseredux wrote:Great conversation. Bummed nobody cares about the prospect of a tactical Dragon Age tho.

And let's not forget how much the first FF ripped D&D elements wholesale...
I review (mostly old) games at: The Annals of Retrodom.

Re: RPG Progress Report
why instead? I'm playing XCOM2 now. I'd then play Dragon Age Tactics whenever it came out. I agree there are a lot of tactical games coming out in the last few years. But that's fine by me. I love the genre. And I really like the Dragon Age universe.Stark wrote:I'd be down with it, I just feel like there is a plethora of those games right now, I'd play XCOM2 instead.noiseredux wrote:Great conversation. There was also some grumblings about it maybe being on Android/iOS. Nothing's confirmed yet - like even if it's going to happen at all. BUT, I'd actually - surprisingly - be pretty ok with it being on Android. That way it wouldn't be "competing" with something as massive as XCOM 2. And really these sorts of games make great portable games (see: FFTA, etc).
Which I don't get. You were eye-ballin' that ROG rig. You actually seem to PLAY a lot of shit on your PC nowadays. Just skip buying esoteric Japanese consoles that only received 19 games before being discontinued for a month or two and you can get a more than competent PC. I'll make the offer again to you - shoot me a budget and I'll make you a part list.BoneSnapDeez wrote: Don't have a console or computer that could run it.![]()

Re: RPG Progress Report
The best thing about Dragon Quest is that it's Dragon Quest. The worst thing about Dragon Quest is that it's Dragon Quest. What I mean is, if you enjoy the formula, you've got a lot of material to play through that will last you a good long while. If you don't enjoy the formula, well, that base formula hasn't changed much over the years, so if you've played one Dragon Quest you've played them all. The biggest changes in the series over the decades have been its graphical improvements.Xeogred wrote:Still haven't really touched the Dragon Quest series actually.
Dragon Quest games I've loved:
Dragon Quest I (GBC)
Dragon Quest IV (DS)
Dragon Quest VIII (PS2)
I totally recommend those. Dragon Quest V (DS) was OK, but rather overrated IMO.
I still want to play through II (GBC), III (SFC), VI (DS), VII (3DS), and IX (DS), but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
