Don't feel bad. Some of us have beaten Secret of the Stars...Sarge wrote:Oh, I am too, of course. But as you say, it has to be consistently well-executed. Too many JRPGs are pretty generic in nature, though, and it certainly keeps me from giving them a serious look.Exhuminator wrote:I'm okay with comfort food, as long as it's consistently well tasting comfort food.
Of course, I'm also the person that played through Star Odyssey, and still, for some reason, have a strange fascination for Secret of the Stars, although it's always quickly put to rest every time I try to play it again. Just... don't judge me, a'ight?

The sad thing is, the game never strikes me as "bad", just consistently "not good".
Another game that goes in that bucket is Beyond the Beyond.

I put over 125 hours into DQIX, and I still never beat the first "legacy" boss. It is such a great game, and I love it so much.Exhuminator wrote:Yeah, I've only spent over 100 hours on two JRPGs; FFXII and Etrian Odyssey Untold. I think the only non-MMO I've put that time into were Oblivion and Syrim. Dragon Age 1 (with DLC) comes close, as does FF Tactics A2 and Persona 3. I never even beat Persona 3! I chose the 'hard' [good] ending, and then realized I would have a hell of a lot of grinding to be able to beat the true final boss, and decided not to bother with it.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I put over 125 hours into DQIX, and I still never beat the first "legacy" boss. But if we include MMOs... don't even want to think about it. FFXIV... played it hardcore for 2 years. My Steam account says 335 hours... and I only played the Steam version for a few months, while I was between PS3 and PS4. I've never played a single game as much as I did that one... I shudder to think of a total playing time.

Exactly! But you know... hooray for the cloud. I'm pretty sure that save (I played on Vita) is on my PSN cloud backup.
But maybe it's time I finally got around to the pair of Persona 2 games instead... UGH too many games...

Speaking of Persona, I've been playing a bit of P4 Golden. I'm not quite up to where I left off on the PS2 version, but I'm not sure it's going to grab me this time, either. I actually dislike the dungeon design a lot, it's just random rogue-like stuff, it would seem. Of course, it's not like the previous Persona games were sparkling examples of design, either... but I dunno. I just don't quite see the love for it yet.
Re: RPG Progress Report
I think the big thing is that the dungeons are broken up rather than one giant one like in P3, and the environments are themed to the character. It makes it a little more interesting. But the strength of the game is definitely not in the dungeon crawling; rather it's the individual fights and the social aspects.Sarge wrote:Speaking of Persona, I've been playing a bit of P4 Golden. It's the relationship stuff and the story more than anything. The only thing that is exciting about the dungeon crawling is really getting the most out of the battle system. If you're not engaging with that, then it's gonna be super tedious.Sarge wrote:Speaking of Persona, I've been playing a bit of P4 Golden.
