I'd say MGS4 is simply a lot more concerned with referencing earlier games in some form. It's well past the return to Shadow Moses in that regard. I enjoyed it more on that level when playing through the series in order.LensOfTruth wrote: MGS3 is loaded with fascinating Easter Egg's. Why did MGS4 have next to nothing? The Blu-Ray bit was pandering (like that whole section of the story) and not at all an Easter Egg, and the "ghosts" were just character portraits.
As a stand-alone game, MGS4 is kind of the worst of the lot in terms of the plot and writing being a hot mess...but for fans, it can be fun I think.

It was very fun for me as a fan of the series when it came out.isiolia wrote: As a stand-alone game, MGS4 is kind of the worst of the lot in terms of the plot and writing being a hot mess...but for fans, it can be fun I think.
When I watched a play through of it last year I was super unimpressed. It seemed like, well, a hot mess.
Metal Gear Solid's story has always been some weird mishmash of Western military fetishism and anime tropes - 4 really leaned hard into the anime in all the worst ways.
It did play quite a bit better though and it laid a lot of the foundation which Peace Walker and then later V would make into a fantastic stealth game.
I think 3 is still by far my favorite as a fan of the series.
Older. Not wiser.

That actually sounds like a MGS game I'd enjoy. I can't stand the rest of the series. I'm sure I ranted about it already a few hundred pages ago.Sarge wrote:Ryan's right on this one, I know long-time fans of the series actually don't like the newest game because it's got almost no story, it's almost pure gameplay, and by all accounts it's the best playing game in the series.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what went into them from a design standpoint I've just never been into the gameplay or the story.

I guess this will be a nice chain reaction of unpopular combo breakers.
I LOVE MGS2. I don't even like Raiden much, but the story is so brilliantly bonkers and basically predicted our currently decaying system and world. Also I'm a fan of linear games and love that about this one and MGS1. Static camera angles rock.
MGS3 is probably my least favorite, but it's still excellent compared to other games. But... Big Boss is a bitch, I didn't care for The Boss much, the story doesn't really do much in the grand scheme of things and is pretty random, and the game is all green. Ocelot is a highlight (as always). Can you guys seriously argue bee dude is good? Or the camouflage spider guy? Or the flamethrower dude? Come on.
I love MGS4 because Solid Snake is 10x better than Big Boss and enjoy his timeline a lot more. It's a pure nostalgia blast on full force. I'm surprised fans of the first two might not like this one. The boss battles are amazing, the music rocks, and the graphics still hold up well. It's not perfect, and did not need 3 rail shooter sections though.
Phantom Pain is pretty much the best open world action based gameplay I've ever played in my life. Why anyone would even consider touching another Rockstar game after this beyond me. God tier controls and mechanics, incredible pacing without the game being utterly aimless, its mission structure and HUB base give it a way better flow than other boring sandbox trash. The story is amazing if you're into the twist and dig into some of the secret side stories. I like it more than MGS3. Yes it sucks that it's obviously unfinished, but does Xenogears suck because of the second disc? Nope. You've still got 50-100+ hours worth of content in TPP, it's hard to complain.
It was easy to warm up to Keifer's Snake too by the way, he seemed like he was far closer to Kurt Russell's Pliskin than David Hayter ever was.
MGS1 is the best though. The voice acting still holds up, I go back to it all the time and it's always amazing. It has the best music in the entire franchise (the new music in Twin Snakes is why I can't play that one), and normal-voice David Hayter is a lot better than his later stuff. Perfect 10/10 game.
Peace Walker was worth a run but nothing I'll ever play again. Maybe others have a fetish for it, but I'm not too into 30+ minute boss battles. It's hilarious to look back on in that regard though.
MGS4 could have had more cutscenes for all I care. Give me more! Same with Xenosaga. Haters gonna hate. What bores me are the WRPG philosophies of giving us this boring mute avatar and create your own adventures. I want to be told insane stories.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Nice breakdown. I've not played some of the games, can't say I feel bad for it. MGS1 is my favorite, second to that is the Gameboy Color game of all things as it's very fun and approachable even in that format. Beyond that Peacekeeper when they finally figured out a good control/camera scheme and I liked where it was going. MGS4 only seen in clips, seen less about MGS3, didn't care about future releases. The two on NES aren't so bad, never quite got into them since I never had the fold out maps they came with or a manual to help with them but they're interesting.
I almost got MGS3 once on 3DS, have looked off and on since when I see one pop up on sale somewhere locally but I always back away as the series has just left me unamused since MGS2 which I didn't like once Raiden popped up (Peacewalker aside.)

I'm usually on board with Xeogred but his breakdown of Metal Gear is bonkers disco retarded. However this is the correct thread for such a thing so it's all good bae.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I find it funny though as a GITS and sci-fi (I'm guessing) fan that you don't like MGS2?
The 4th wall breaking is so... utterly insane too. There will never be another game like this ever again. The omega mindfuck.
@Tanooki: The greatness to MGS1 is how self contained it is. Although a huge fan of the series, I always love when a first main installment is a perfect complete package. I still say this about Halo too since it was all downhill after the first one there.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Agreed. I actually was pretty cool with Halo back in the day. Got some local MP time at Midway sometimes, learned even more that I will always middle as far as kills go and I really just don't enjoy it. The campaign and story though by far was the most enjoyable and kept me interested right to the speedy end. It stands well alone and still does, just as MGS does as it was a complete package. It's kind of like some movies or books where the first is silky smooth awesome, then someone feels let's make another and does tweaking and it gets more crappy by the continuation if it's even allowed to go beyond the 2nd.Xeogred wrote: @Tanooki: The greatness to MGS1 is how self contained it is. My popular opinion is that Metal Gear is one of the best series in gaming. And MGS2 is the crowning achievement.Exhuminator wrote:I'm usually on board with Xeogred but his breakdown of Metal Gear is bonkers disco retarded. However this is the correct thread for such a thing so it's all good bae.
MGSV had an absolutely incredible open-world gameplay system, but the story was dished out a teaspoon at a time. It's one of those great games that could obviously have been even greater with a little more time in development.
