Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
The two analog stick thing wasn't really a thing until the PS2\oXbox era and the DC came out before those. Obviously the dualshock came out in the PS1 era, but I don't think that many people had one. I think if the DC had stuck around longer they would've released an official controller without a VMU, moving the cord, and dual analog sticks.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

I was going to say something similar, dual analogs wasn't really codified for quite a while. Almost no games actually used the second stick much, and it really didn't become an absolutely necessary staple until Halo came along on the original XBOX. It probably should have had six face buttons, though. I actually like the Saturn 3D pad a bit better overall. The analog on that one feels weird, too, but it's an interesting weird.

I do like some old "twin stick games" (like Robotron: 2084) but I can't stand modern-day 3D dual analog stick controls. Yuck.
And the DC controller is one of my faves. It's so comfy!

I didn't think you played new-fangled consoles like the Dreamcast.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I do like some old "twin stick games" (like Robotron: 2084) but I can't stand modern-day 3D dual analog stick controls. Yuck.

Bone even owns a 360 and a PS3. He's a closet modern gamer.ElkinFencer10 wrote:I didn't think you played new-fangled consoles like the Dreamcast.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I do like some old "twin stick games" (like Robotron: 2084) but I can't stand modern-day 3D dual analog stick controls. Yuck.

I may be off on this, but I know Turok on N64 did this as well using the C buttons for movement and the stick was to look around, perhaps it was the first and others aped/modded it as needed until twin sticks got into general use.noiseredux wrote: As far as FPS games go, I must say that the scheme used in things like the unreleased Half-Life work really really well if you get used to them. You use the four face buttons to move forward, back or sideways. You use the analog stick to aim. You use the shoulders to fire and the dpad for switching weapons, etc. It's actually really comfortable once you "get it."
You're correct. As people like to point out the PS2 came out fast (probably to stomp Sega's ass on purpose) and it has little of value for games in the US or Japan when it dropped and for a bit going forward. The deal in Japan was DVD players would cost more than the PS2 did or close enough in value (forget which) so people would rather buy the Sony player knowing they made some of the best ones around and got a game box to boot out of it that also ran all their PS1 stuff too. Sony cleaned up having it run movies, which all the more made Nintendo look stupid with the MINI-disc they used.noiseredux wrote:my understanding is that the PS2 being a DVD player was a really big selling point in Japan. And this is only anecdotal, but it's why I myself chose a PS2 over a DC at the time.
I'm kind of surprised no one is bringing up Sega's own Virtua On dual sticks they created I believe on Saturn and in Japan the DC as well. Those things were crazy.

I've always wanted them because I love Virtual On but they remain my white whale. The Dreamcast ones are much harder to get a hold of but you can use a Saturn to Dreamcast adapter for the Saturn ones.Tanooki wrote:I'm kind of surprised no one is bringing up Sega's own Virtua On dual sticks they created I believe on Saturn and in Japan the DC as well. Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I had a pair back when I had a real collection a bit over a decade ago. When I've said before I had a few thousand games, dozen systems and more with handhelds I wasn't kidding. I didn't buy most third party and only some first party accessories, but stuff I'd consider a necessity like those sticks were a big deal to have and made the game so much more enjoyable. Just like the groaning about the Dc controller, I was fine with it other than L/R tiredness having to hold it down in racer, but I did get the official though agetec released heavy joystick for all the arcade conversions as it just was a necessity to play right.

I actually have a hard time imagining him playing a game that has NOT been fan translated and was released for some obscure system that I've never seen in person...ElkinFencer10 wrote:I feel like our entire relationship is a lie, Bone.Exhuminator wrote: Bone even owns a 360 and a PS3.
