It just so happens that I picked up a copy of this game recently for the ol' Genesis. The game is oozing with style but MAN the controls are super weird!

I'm the one that argues against Wind Waker as "a great Zelda." Like any reasonable person, I want to point out that I'm not trying to be actively hateful. Wind Waker isn't the bane of my existence or anything.

Wind Waker has a lot of great aspects, in fact; It's Nintendo-polished, it has fanastic graphics, music, and sound effects. It has fluid mechanics, as any Zelda game should. It's just light on content.

Relatively few dungeons (Last Dungeon = Boss Rush), not a lot to find out in the world, and the game has a bit of a slow start. (I know a few people that really struggled with the rope-swinging tutorial.) The forced stealth sequence didn't help matters. Nintendo themselves mentioned that the game was rushed, which helps validate some criticisms.

I'd like to admit this too: My first time through, I didn't have the bigger wallets before the fetch quest. So, I had to fetch the wallets to fetch the underwater chests to fetch the maps to fetch the "pieces." That's four fetch quests rolled into one.

Four fetch quests rolled into one.

That's why I don't care much for Wind Waker. Sometimes, I'll feel nostalgic and want to play it, but it's not a Zelda I place among the greats.

Hopefully, I didn't make any enemies with this post; Continue enjoying Wind Waker. It's your right. If you like a game, that's a great thing. Just be aware that not everyone holds Wind Waker in high regard. (Not "hate," just "not agree with.")

Thanks for reading my oversized post.

I totally get where you're coming from.

I'd implore you to try the HD version on Wii U. It fixes just about every mechanical and pacing problem with the game.

I loved Wind Waker (it was my first and only Zelda game for a very long time) but the Wii U release really pushed it to the top for me.

For the record Majoras Mask 3D is right up there too. So I've a different taste in those games than a lot of people.

From Link's football head and cat eyes, to the misplaced stealth crap in Forsaken Fortress, to literally fishing for Triforce pieces (as opposed to killing bosses in dungeons for them), to blandly sailing in a slow boat over a boring ocean, and a dozen other things I hated about it... Wind Wanker sucks. It always has. Even Phantom Hourglass is great compared to it.

Wind Waker was uneven. It wasn't awful, and there were elements I loved, but the criticisms on the sailing and lack of dungeons are legit.

Also, I liked Spirit Tracks, too. Phantom Hourglass would have easily been better than Wind Waker without the timed stealth sequences, so like its main inspiration, it's a bit uneven.

Phantom Hourglass > Spirit Tracks

I beat them both, that's what I think. They are both 7/10 kinda games. Which is a sad thing to say about Zelda entries. Both are better than Wind Wanker though.

Oh man, a mention of Wind Waker is like throwing up the "Exhuminator signal."

I don't have a dog in the fight. To me, Wind Waker is a game like The 7th Saga or Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. I like those games but can easily comprehend why some others wouldn't.
