In this case the 32X functions as just a pass-thru device. Not that I'm planning to use it like that, but I guess it's kinda neat that it's functional in this way with the R5.
What...
Well now I'm just extra pissed off that it doesn't support 32X games.

Has anyone hacked this console yet?
Because they shaped the plastic around the slot in a way that makes it so it doesn't fit. I was already annoyed about that. I'm just aggravated further now.

Has anyone cut the plastic to jam it in to see what happens?

If it's just the lack of an emulator, that seems like something that could be easily fixed with a firmware update. I wonder why they haven't done that yet.

It kinda makes sense, though.
I mean that's the same way a 32X works on a Genesis console. In that you don't need to have the 32X powered on or have the AV cables attached directly to it to play regular Genesis carts via the 32X slot.
Similar in a sense to a PBC.

I didn't want to be the guy complaining about the shady origin of their emulators because I really do like my Retron 5, but maybe it's because they haven't found one they wanted to steal yet.
More likely they don't see the 32X as worth it enough to go through the trouble. There's really no good reason for why they haven't done it.

That's true, there's not going to be a LOT of demand for it, but since they do pretty much just steal emulators for it, I can't imagine it would take that much extra effort, relatively speaking.
