I consider myself a huge anime fan and I drop 99% of them within the first two or three episodes. Heck, the most recent series that I actually managed to watch from beginning to end (and again) was from 2011.

We should have a picky-person's discussion about anime. I have strong opinions as well, and can't watch most of it. Despite that, the stuff I like I love.

I'm extremely picky about my anime. Moe harem romcom or bust.

Yeah, honestly, I think that "incredible stuff" is rare in all forms of entertainment media. The older and more jaded experienced you get, the more this is true.

Yeah, if anyone thinks modern anime sucks, they clearly haven't seen JoJo.

Or Death Parade. Or the first season of Psycho-Pass. Or Parasyte -the maxim-.

I poke away at mostly manga, anime just moves too slow. I will record a few things on Toonami as they pop up new like DBZ Kai, Parasyte, and Samurai Champloo lately, in the past was Kill la Kill until it went into reruns. I tried out Michiko and Hatchin but it got boring for me. Over the years Toonami has had lots of solid stuff - Outlaw Star, Coeboy Bebop, Lupin (tv show), Naruto, One Piece, Inuyasha, and more.

I find a lot of the anime I care for was stuff I picked up on in college in the later half of the 90s and that stuff ranged from back into the 80s. Even then I found a few fun things through Showtime (Fist of the Northstar, Wizards) or just the TV conversions with Robotech and Transformers. Something I really dig I haven't seen in a long time is Record of the Lodoss War, could buy it, doubt I'd find time to watch it though. I've got both of those semi-rare 5pack DVD sets (there's 2) for Lupin the 3rd First (and Final) Haul and I've had them I think a year or more now and still haven't got around to them. :( Right now I'd like to get back my Studio Ghibli movies I had on DVD as Blu Ray but well...money.

I think that's why so many like FFT's story, at least it's why I do. After so many of the early FFs being Medieval and/or Steampunk Star Wars, and so many of the later FFs getting way too sophomoric, it was great to see one that felt grounded.
Granted, the PSP port has a lovely translation, so there's that. But I grew up playing the original, which couldn't even keep its names consistent.

Beyond that, my problem is with the second half of the game... just betrayal upon betrayal, introducing new villains and then revealing the "True villain"... ad nauseum.

As for the Xeno stuff... maybe 'gears wasn't so bad, but it was literally unfinished. The Saga games offend out of the sheer self-indulgence of the anime-director-wannabe cut-scenes... not to mention all the nonsensical stuff.
I review (mostly old) games at: The Annals of Retrodom.

I wish the Xenosaga games had more cutscenes. Fantastic stuff.

I really enjoyed the Parasyte manga; does the anime do it justice?
