Fighting game stories are just a flimsy excuse to start the fisticuffs, anyway. Don't worry about it.

Really, you just want to jump in and see if one feels right. You should be able to tell pretty quickly if it's quality or not. If you want recommendations, though, I'd probably start with some of these:

Street Fighter Alpha 3
Capcom vs. SNK 2
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Street Fighter IV
Garou: Mark of the Wolves

There's so many more great ones, but those are some of my absolute favorites. They all bring a little bit different to the table. As far as combos... well, I'm pretty terrible at them, and it's what I'd need to elevate my game. I'm good right now, but I don't reliably deal as much damage as I could, but honestly, most of us aren't going into tournament play anyway, so don't sweat it.

EDIT: Actually, if you want to play the "best" version of early SF, probably go with Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and Alpha 3 is the best of that particular spinoff. I played a ton of Alpha 3, and prefer it to the style of the original SF2.

What do you guys think about those?
Shinobi (3DS) > Shinobi III > Shadow Dancer > Shinobi > Revenge of Shinobi

Don't get me wrong...They are all pretty awesome games. (I haven't beaten Shinobi (PS2), Nightshade (PS2), Shinobi Legions (SAT) or either of the Shinobi games on the Game Gear; so, I cannot rank them.)

I went over halfway in Shinobi for PS2. It's a brutally difficult game. That's part of why I stopped playing, it just stopped being fun. Maybe I could handle it now, but dang. Nightshade uses the same engine, but it's not nearly as difficult. I've also heard it's not quite as tightly designed, either, coming off a bit more bland overall.

There were three retro reboots that came out at that time: Shinobi, Contra: Shattered Soldier, and Rygar. I actually think Rygar was the best of these. It also had terrible voice acting and a princess that looks just like Britney Spears. Oh, the humanity.

I think that Contra: Shattered Soldier is probably the best, but I agree that Rygar was a pretty awesome game.

I was so excited for Shattered Soldier back in the day.

Then I bought and was... shattered. 8)

Seriously, game is testicle crushing hard. Has anyone here legit beat it? And how much cocaine did you snort first?

Alpha 3 has been my favourite for playstyle. I put a lot of time into it back when it came out on PlayStation and it's been the one I'm going back to mostly at the moment so I guess I'm looking for something that feels similar, I also feel the sprites are really high quality and that's always kept me interested.

I'm definitely not looking to be getting to tournament level of fighting games, I'm pretty poor but would just like to find something that isn't just Street Fighter.

As for preferred console it doesn't matter, its all pretty emulatable.

In that case your best best is to set up MAME and Kawaks and play the very best 2D fighters there are. Pure arcade emulation. That gives you access to all the arcade classics and Neo Geo ones as well. It doesn't get any better than that.

Fighters to browse: http://www.mamedb.com/category/Fighter

Emulation help:

I give you this information knowing you are only going to be playing the games you bought the actual arcade machines for, because you're an upstanding and legal individual.

Yakuza 4 is a real hoot. One of the funniest moments in this game for me has to still be the Revelations. Anyone not familiar, the main character roaming Tokyo will happen upon people who are involved in some really strange, funny events, and then the main character will flip out his phone to record it and post it to his blog. From that event, you have a revelation from the event where you learn a new fighting move. Definitely Japanese humor. But one character captures the Revelations on a chunk of wood and chisels out a carving of the event. So friggin weird and funny, and I appreciate the weird sense of humor this game always has.

Here's a clip of Revelations in Yakuza 4:

But here's the Revelations for Saejima:
