Pay-for-play definitely sucks, but Criterion deserves major props for delivering constant updates to the game.
Remember, the front-end was completely redesigned a long time after release and the bikes were free as were a couple of new cars included in the updates (I think).
Sure, they charge for "Premium" content but it isn't too expensive. Hell, they didn't even purposely gimp the game like the last Tomb Raider or Lumines II so that you'd be pretty much forced to pay for the content.

At least they are just charging for cosmetic/fun stuff that you don't need but just want. Charging for actual game content like map packs splits up the community.
Of course, I say this as they are prepping the new island expansion ....
