Of course. But I think the ideal situation is a balance somewhere between old and comfortable and new and different.Exhuminator wrote:Ordering too much comfort food makes the chefs lazy, and they stop trying to create delicious new dishes.marlowe221 wrote:There is certainly nothing wrong with comfort food, even if it is in video game form.
Sometimes it's fun to play a new game that is entirely different than anything I've played before. Sometimes all I want is an old favorite that I already know well. It's good to have both.
Now, some might say that the balance is off in the modern gaming industry and I wouldn't disagree with that too much.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I always keep hearing the no innovative modern games and all the same games argument.
When you include all the different games out right now, there are more games in more genres than ever before. Big budget games, indie games, platforms such as PC, console, handheld, and mobile. This statemwnt is less true than it used to be.
In retro consoles, a big majority of games were side-scrolling platforms. Often very derivative of each other. And mentioned above, we had 6 Mega Man games for the same system. And then that doesnt even touch on how many of the platformers were essentially re-skins with minor adjustments from previous games.
An argument can be made that most of the big budget big sellers are sequels, but those titles dont represent all of gaming. Those sell well because you have a large group of more casual gamers who get 1 or 2 games a year and get something they are familiar with and know they will like.

That's way more hyperbolic than what I inferred. Comfort food games are rampant but not all pervasive. I do agree this isn't a new phenomena by any means.Jmustang1968 wrote:I always keep hearing the no innovative modern games and all the same games argument.

I think my response was more triggered from marlowe's comment, but it is a common sentiment expressed here and elsewhere.Exhuminator wrote:That's way more hyperbolic than what I inferred. Mighty Gunvolt is OK. If it was $2.99 rather than $4.99, I might be able to give it a heartier recommendation. (I still need to play Azure Strike Gunvolt.)Gunstar Green wrote:Azure Striker Gunvolt has been on my to-do list.Exhuminator wrote:Have you played Azure Striker Gunvolt or Mighty Gunvolt?Gunstar Green wrote:Agreed, I always defend them when Mega Man discussions come up. If you are looking for a really fun "Mega Man" game, however, I highly recommend Gunman Clive and Gunman Clive 2. They aren't very long, and they aren't particularly challenging for veterans of the Mega Man series. They have a lot of personality, however, and they "feel" more like a classic Mega Man game than anything else I have played recently. (Also, you can get both of them for less than $5.)

Yeah that's why I haven't picked up either of the Gunvolt games on 3DS eShop yet. They both seem overpriced for what they are.prfsnl_gmr wrote:If it was $2.99 rather than $4.99

I'm a big fan of the Zero series, my nostalgia for the main and X lines is just too powerful and makes me forget about them haha. Are they all on the Wii U VC yet? Last I remember I think Capcom were up to 2 or 3. I have to assume they'll all make it sometime, then I'll probably replay them. The final boss theme in Zero 4 is one of the best ever.
I think I only played one of the ZX games though and don't remember thinking much about it. I'd be open to checking it out again if it hits the VC or something.

I played one of the GBA games and yeah, it wasn't bad. I think "forgettable" is the word for even the decent newer Sonic games to me though. A lot of it is the aesthetics... I just don't care for Sonic's new looks, the levels don't look as wacky as the classics, all the new characters after Knuckles totally suck, "Eggman?" why? Generations was worth a run but I don't see myself playing it again, I didn't like it nearly as much as most apparently. I still want to check out Colors though and I thought the demo for Lost World was cool, but people tell me it's pretty boring. I'll check it out for myself sometime.noiseredux wrote:did you play any of the GBA games, or Sonic Pocket Adventure on NGPC? Or what about Colors on DS? I'm pretty sure there's a mod for Sonic Generations (on PC) that allows you to just play the 2D levels - you'd like that I bet.Xeogred wrote: Sonic probably could have been on the list, too bad that was short lived though. 1, 2, 3, S&K, and CD are what I'm thinking of, if they knocked out 20 more sequels like those with similar aesthetics and graphic styles I'd probably like them all.
Sonic 4 is obviously attempting to following the 1, 2, 3, S&K, CD lineage but I can't in good conscience recommend that one to you.

I got Mighty Gunvolt free for backing Mighty No. 9. Wasn't really anything special.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Mighty Gunvolt is OK. If it was $2.99 rather than $4.99, I might be able to give it a heartier recommendation. (I still need to play Azure Strike Gunvolt.)

I've also played and enjoyed the Gunman Clive games.

Actually, I agree with you that we are rather spoiled for choice these days.Jmustang1968 wrote: I think my response was more triggered from marlowe's comment, but it is a common sentiment expressed here and elsewhere.
Then again, if someone who was a AAA gamer was complaining about a lack of variety, I could see his point in a way.
So I guess it kind of depends on your point of view.
