Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Games I could play with infinite sequels
Dark Souls stuff
Metroid
Zelda (3D ones and let's say Link's Awakening to the Capcom Oracle games in style)
Megaman (NES), I for one absolutely ate up 9-10 and loved them. I have my favorites, but I love 1-6 all dearly. 7 brought in the changes and I HATE it, haha. I actually love Megaman & Bass though. 8 is okay... annoying gimmicks per level though. Just give me that NES formula.
Sonic probably could have been on the list, too bad that was short lived though. 1, 2, 3, S&K, and CD are what I'm thinking of, if they knocked out 20 more sequels like those with similar aesthetics and graphic styles I'd probably like them all.

Ordering too much comfort food makes the chefs lazy, and they stop trying to create delicious new dishes.marlowe221 wrote:There is certainly nothing wrong with comfort food, even if it is in video game form.

You're not the only one. When they tried to "modernize" the classic games for lack of a better word they lost something. I can go on about the changes in music, the level design gimmicks and the sprite-to-screen ratio but I've done it before. The simplicity and design of the 8-bit games just hit a sweet spot for me.Xeogred wrote: Megaman (NES), I for one absolutely ate up 9-10 and loved them. To a lot of non-fans, Mega Man 1-6 and the Game Boy titles are simple rehashes but for me they're like different albums from a favorite musician with a rough first album, a super hit follow-up and a few ups and downs as you go along that still retain the core aspects that you loved in the first place.
Mega Man sort of has its cake and eats it too though, it innovated through creating spin-offs while leaving the "comfort food" intact for fans who wanted more of it.

The musician comparison is a great one that I never thought of. That is a great way to describe games like mario, megaman and sonic.Gunstar Green wrote:You're not the only one. Of course I think the best megaman games come from the short lived Legends series, but the original and the x series are still a lot of fun.

The album metaphor is perfect haha.
The X series on the other hand had a pretty nice transition to the PSX I thought, with X4-X6. I know people knock on X6 a lot and yeah, it's got some weird issues... but I'm still a fan of it. I wish more 32bit era sprite based platformers existed in general.
More people need to know about the Xtreme games on the GBC as well. They're basically what X-X2 would be like on the NES, man they were really cool and a nice discovery a few years ago for me. Can't believe I missed them for such a long time.
Not too big on the GB games, but V is definitely amazing and the huge Metroidvania Wily tower was fantastic.

The GBC ones are stupendously programmed, that's for sure.Xeogred wrote:More people need to know about the Xtreme games on the GBC as well. I think that the Zero and ZX games are underrated by a lot of Mega Man enthusiasts. The Zero games have a pretty good story, tough challenge, and lite RPG elements. And if you want "Mega Man Metroidvania", the two ZX games on DS are where it's at for that.

did you play any of the GBA games, or Sonic Pocket Adventure on NGPC? Or what about Colors on DS? I'm pretty sure there's a mod for Sonic Generations (on PC) that allows you to just play the 2D levels - you'd like that I bet.Xeogred wrote: Sonic probably could have been on the list, too bad that was short lived though. 1, 2, 3, S&K, and CD are what I'm thinking of, if they knocked out 20 more sequels like those with similar aesthetics and graphic styles I'd probably like them all.
Sonic 4 is obviously attempting to following the 1, 2, 3, S&K, CD lineage but I can't in good conscience recommend that one to you.

Am I the only person that liked the Mega Man Battle Network Games? Thought the real time grid based combat mixed with cards was pretty cool. Art style was also pretty good for a GBA game. Although I do have to say when you were outside of the digital world things were pretty meh at times.

Agreed, I always defend them when Mega Man discussions come up. I think they're some of the finest 2D action games out there.Exhuminator wrote:I think that the Zero and ZX games are underrated by a lot of Mega Man enthusiasts. A lot of people don't like the Dimps games but I do personally feel like the GBA games and the DS games were the true heir to the Sonic series.noiseredux wrote:did you play any of the GBA games, or Sonic Pocket Adventure on NGPC? I don't hate it, it just wasn't for me though.Fragems wrote:Am I the only person that liked the Mega Man Battle Network Games?
