So I'm having lots of fun with the Famicom Disk System. I've been emulating a bunch of games to see if they're worth buying. Last night I was playing Adian no Tsue (it's like The Legend of Zelda but with math problems) and Hao Kun no Fushigina Tabi (the original and less crappy version of Mystery Quest) via the FCEUX NES/Fami/FDS emulator.

I noticed something puzzling. Many of the games I've downloaded already have save data. This struck me as really odd, until I thought about it some. See, FDS games obviously don't use SRAM w/ a save battery (this is considered a separate "file" by emulators) nor do they use additional blank floppies to save. Instead save data is written directly to the disk. Most of these old games lack a "delete" function like The Legend of Zelda. If old data already exists on the disk then your first save can be used to overwrite it (much like Final Fantasy). Point is, these disks are forever altered once that first save was made back in 1987 or whatever - and most of the disk images that were dumped and are now floating around the 'net have someone's old save contained within. Big shout out to the guy who named his RPG protagonist SHITHEAD.

(Technically you can erase data and overwrite the disk completely but it requires additional third party tools)

Yeah I'm really enjoying this trend. I would never think to track down a PS2 version of Mushihimesama... but a $20 digital port on Steam? Yes please! I just wish more of this stuff would come over to GOG.

It will. More and more people are finally starting to realize GOG is Steam except without the totalitarian DRM gatekeeping.

Yeah I've noticed more modern/indie stuff is going right to GOG right around the same time it hits Steam, which is extremely promising.

Per the numbers that have been released, GOG is second only to Steam in digital distribution. Some titles, like Witcher 3, sell more on GOG, but on most it is a solid second.

Lars Doucet, creator of Defender Quest, stated that GOG was 10% of his sales, more than any distribution system but Steam. Steam was 60%.

I think that's pretty good considering Steam had a five year head start on GOG. (Not to mention the name "Valve" associated with their service.)

In games available it is a solid second. It kinda blew me away when I discovered that. I jumped on the GOG bandwagon back in 2007 to get a copy of Sacred Gold. Now that Galaxy is live, I own almost as many games on GOG as I do on Steam.

With digital games I first check GOG and then look at Steam only if a GOG version doesn't exist.

What irks me most is when I buy a game from Steam and then a GOG version shows up like a month later. This happened with Chantelise: A Tale of Two Sisters, for instance.

I am up to 72 games in my library on GOG. That's more games than I own on any console.

I always look on GOG first and buy there if possible but I do buy games on Steam too. It just depends.
