Play Dragon Quest VII and then talk to me about long beginnings.

I absolutely loved and finished everything in Dragon Quest VIII and wanting to keep the vibe going I bought VII. Man that game puts a new meaning to the word slow. That was brutal. I only made it 6 hours before I turned it off forever and sold it.

Is it slower than Persona 4's beginning?

It takes 3 hours before your first combat. That's not hyperbole; I remember reading that and thinking it was exaggeration, then checking my file when I reached that point.

funny I was under the impression that dragon quest is a more battle centered franchise compared to final fantasy.

DQVII is very story heavy. The game is set up like an episodic anime with you slowly realizing that all of the bad things happening in each episode are due to the machinations of the big bad.

Yeah, but in Persona 4, you don't even do anything for like the first 5 hours or so (unless I remember wrong). You pretty much just read walls of text and press x :P

It was maybe an hour if you were a slow reader. The three hour statistic for DQ 7 is a fact.

Tears to Tiara II probably takes the cake as one of the slowest games ever. It's a Visual Novel mixed with a Tactical RPG. You get a 3-5 minute battle every 3-4 hours for the first 12 hours or so. Then it opens up and gives you a little more freedom but it's still like an hour or two of reading before each and every main mission.

Really want to finish that game, but I kind of stalled out at 20 hours in a month or two back when I realized I was only 1/3rd of the way through the game and that was with speeding through just the main quests with minimal grinding on the side.

Is it weird that I think that this sounds awesome? (assuming the writing is good)

I honestly really like a lot of text to read. It's relaxing.
