I would rather play a flawed innovation than a polished retread.

I don't know, it depends on the retread. I appreciate flawed art just as much as mindless regurgitation if I enjoyed the original. Like Dynasty Warriors: it's mindless regurgitation of flawed art.

You know how when you show a little kid a magic trick, they love it? But then they want you to show it to them again. So you do. And the kid loves it just as much the second time! And no matter how many times you show that kid that same old magic trick, they just keep on loving it.

A lot of gamers are like that little kid.

I agree 100%. I am a fan of ambition. The more ambitious the game is, the more I enjoy it. Attention all to detail, unique approaches to gameplay and storytelling and uncommon ideas are what drive my enjoyment now.

Of course, I have been playing games for 30 years now, so I have experienced a lot. A lot of people have only played call of duty for the first or second time so for them it is still fresh and unique, which is why they keep retreading, because there is always an age range entering their demographic.

I am not sure if I agree with te magic trick analogy. I think a solid game design and/or mechanics can be good enough to sustain sequels. I can use the Fallout games as an example. Same similar style, but new location, story, and other wrinkles make it a fun gamestyle to tackle again. It isnt particularly innovative but it works.

I feel you on that one. I've personally been playing games since about '83, so just about everything is deja vu to some extent for me.

It's true, some magic tricks have a little more variety in their conjuring than others. But there are some franchises (of which I won't mention as to not offend delicate sensibilities) that really are the same damn thing again and again. This is a rabbit hole of criticism for me so I'll just leave it at that.

Could Assassin's Creed possibly be on that list?

I'd be willing to bet on it.

No, it's cool. I know what Dynasty Warriors is. It is mindlessly repetitive, retreads the same ground endlessly, and only typically offers innovation in bits and pieces. Yet there is something about the gameplay I find soothing that I just can't deny. That's not saying that I always want this, just that I do occasionally. Some of it is out of pure nostalgia, and some of it is that the game allows me to enter a zen-like state of action and reaction over and over again that I find restful.

Do I want only the same thing over and over again in my games? No, definitely not, I've played a variety of things. But I don't think it's entirely awful if I sometimes play a rehashed experience. Just don't do it always and be willing to branch out to try new things.

I will 99% of the time beat any bad game that ends up wiggling it's way into my system. However any good/great game has about a 50% of being abandoned before completion.

I just feel less of a drive to complete a good game when it slows down since I know I can go back and enjoy a replay in the future :P.
