tips for setting up Xbox Media Center/MAME

Post by V3rtigo »

Normally I hate emulators but I was given an old xbox and figure I should just fiddle with it for a bit. So, pass along any helpful tips and links if you have them. Things I need to know:

What size HD will I need?
Best place for roms? (PM me for this I think)
What site has a guide that you have followed that worked as listed?

I have a 120 gig in mine, and it's about right. Plenty for all the emulators, and a whole bunch of games. If you're not planning on keeping a bunch of xbox games on disc, 60 would probably be fine. Of course these days, it doesn't make much sense to buy anything less than 250 gigs, if you're looking at the price per gig ratio.

As for the roms, I just copied over a full set of MAME roms. Of course current MAME will support a slightly different set of roms than the old MameoX build. So not all of them work. I don't know if anyone has compiled a rom set specifically for MameoX. But you can get a current set of MAME roms from http://www.pleasuredome.org.uk/, they're open registration, and MAME roms are free to leech IIRC.

I don't remember what guide I used. I just googled around and figured it out. xboxscene.com was a great help of course. It helped that I used a chip with an FTP server in the bios. I'm not sure how you do the soft mod.

I'd just get a 250gb drive, for how cheap they are there's no reason not to. Bitgamer has a full set of the proper roms for coinops, I think underground-gamer may have a set also. If you keep an eye out around here people are usually giving out invites.

Yeah, I'll probably be adding my questions to this thread as well. I recently bought a modchipped Xbox for only $50 plus shipping, but the current harddrive is only 20GB, so I'll have to swap it out. 250GB sounds good, but what harddrives are compatible, etc and I guess newegg or tigerdirect would be the best place to buy one? Is it easy to swap the harddrive?
