Re: Together Retro: Grim Fandango
Whoah whoah whoah! Chapter 2 was dull? No way, that is an awesome chapter with such a unique and interesting set of locales.
@noise, sriously, give the game a shot. This is one of the few games where I say if you don't enjoy the gameplay, at least use a walkthrough. The world in itself is so interesting and the characters hilarious and the story absolutely divine that people need to experience it.
Yes, the first main puzzle in the game is slow, because the characters haven't been developed yet, but trust me it gets fixed. If you need hints, address them here and I will give you non spoilered hints. It really is something special but with all classic adventure games, you need to just sit down and spend time with it. It grows on you.

It was interesting until you spent an hour running around the massive environment trying to find the small stamp or something you missed on a counter on one of the 70 or so screens.

So I've got approximately 6 days to finish this, as next week Tuesday both SC II: Legacy of the Void and Fallout 4 hit. And those two combined will eat the rest of the month.
Challenge accepted.

Re: Together Retro: Grim Fandango
Years and years ago, I had Grim Fandango for the PC. I think I never got far (certainly not through chapter one) due to some bugs I didn't know how to get around (this was back before I thought about googling the issue and stuff). So a month or two ago I bought it on the PS4. I got bored about (I'm guessing) halfway through chapter two when I couldn't figure anything out and had to start consulting walkthroughs for help, and I gave up. It feels like the old adventure games where nothing is obvious. I didn't intend to give up, I just never started the game back up because I never felt like playing. And I saw they did nothing to fix the wonky camera issues. Sometimes I didn't know I was missing a whole room because of it. I hope I'll still go back to it some time soon. I'd like to see what happens, though it may be a frustrating ride to get there.

The key to grim fandango is to listen. It is hard sometimes to realize that the witty dialog actually serves a purpose in offering hints on what you should do to solve puzzles.
It is important to look at things individually and address them one at a time. There is only one puzzle in grim fandango that I felt was unfair and obtuse and that is the race ticket puzzle. That just didn't make any sense.

The race ticket puzzle was the worst, and was the one I was referring to in Chapter 2 earlier.
I feel like Chapter 3 and 4 were the best ones, in terms of story progression and especially puzzles - there was less word to explore, which meant it was easier to experiment and figure out puzzles on your own.

The weird thing is that many of the old LucasArts games that the Double Fine guys worked on (Maniac Mansion, Secret of Monkey Island) are among my favorite adventure games of all time. And made a lot more sense to me.
This game... there's a poisoning I need to get to. I leave and try to get in a car. Can't. Go left, highway. No good. Go right. An alley, I go up a rope and enter someone else's office. Start to snoop and it's like "nah, you gotta get to the poisoning." Leave. Go right. There's a circus or something. A clown. And each screen I'm going through takes a small eternity because this dude walks SO SLOW I'm surprised his legs aren't atrophying.
Again, I like the setting and the style and all... but I'm finding this so boring off the bat compared to hold favorites that it was descended from.

You can run. If you are playing pc and nit using the point and click interface, hold shift to run. As for the poisoning, talking with the secretary, you learn that you don't have a driver to get there. So you need Glottis in the garage, but he isn't licensed for it, so you need the boss to sign the license.

What??? When I talked to her she basically was like "why are you talking to me? Get to that poisoning." Man, this game might suck. Sorry.

Yeah dialog plays a heavy role in understanding the puzzles for the game and at times it is really easy to miss them if you aren't paying attention. There is a later puzzle in the same area that, if you don't listen, you could miss out an important piece of the puzzle.
