i have an XFX r9 280 I'll be unloading this week if interested. It's has 3GB RAM and will be a tad more future-proof than a 2GB 960. Let me know if interested. It's been in my rig for the past 6 months, never over clocked and kept in a very cool basement (constant 65 degrees) in a very well ventilated case with excellent cable management) and am sure I can get you to your price point

Def interested, but why replacing after only 6 months? And what are you replacing it with?

well, it seems as if i've caught the PC modding bug where i'm in a cycle of ugradding my parts frequently. More importantly, I'm upgradding to a XFX R9 290A that has 4GB's RAM in hopes of getting more FPS for a heavily modded (and I mean heavily like 450+ mods) Skyrim. I'm averaging around 25'ish FPS, which I can live with, but hoping to bump up to around mid 30 with the newer GPU.

P.S. For those that will ask about the number of mod's that may say 255 is the limit, I have several merged mods that keep the count uber low. I still have room for about 100 more should I chose to.

*edit forget the 290 4gb, my 290x 8gb just arrived today. Can't wait to install this tonight and see the increase in FPS to my skyrim build.

I keep putting off buying the parts for the new PC. It costs money and requires time and energy and my powers of apathy are frustrating me. But I had to buy a new monitor, and the new monitor is 1080p, so games are just not working the way they used to. This may force my hand. This weekend I may pull the trigger on a PC, finally. Or I'll just get frustrated and drink beer. Which way will I go? Tune in next time to find out...

I am thinking about upgrading to open frame pcs for my PCs that rarely move. What I mean by this is instead of rack mounting them, treat the pcs like arcade owners treat PCBs. I recently obtained a Sony SUS-590 hifi equipment tower. It has 17inch/431mm wide, 13inch/330mm deep slots for gear with 32.75inches/832mm vertical for shelves (it only has two shelves currently), a big glass door, and lots of room for modding.

Looks like this:


The plan is to mount all the pc hardware - Motherboard, powersupply, ssd, hdd, and gpu, to a board like this:

Two flooring it if I have to for the GPU.

Then slot the boards into shelf holders. All wires will be tacked down, optical drive will be in the tower but not always hooked up. The back will have quiet fans on it, with a sensor to turn on old hardcore server fans if the temp gets to high. The glass door will be replaced with a decorative cloth over a filter with a lattice over it - think 1970s floor speaker:


The goal is to fit three pcs: two gaming, one data server, as well as the switch, router, modem, hot swappable HDD bays, etc. I will have spare cases incase I need to take one of the pcs somewhere, but I dont travel with my gaming pcs like I use to. There will ofcourse be plenty of fans and liquid cooling. I am just drafting up the plans right now since I have the piece of furniture. It may just end up being a console storage stand.

that's brilliant, Fast. My first thought was about heat - and then yeah, you nailed it. Water cooling. Of course water cooling! Seriously, fascinating project. Please document all stages of progress.
