resident evil X: the one to avoid

Post by nickfil »

I'm pretty new to the resident evil series. Jumped on with the wii version of 4. I picked up zero, 1, and 2 for the gamecube a little while ago. Zero and the remake of one look fantastic, but 2 was showing a little bit of its age. The fact that it is leon s kennedy will keep me playing.

So... are there resident evils to avoid? Ones that don't measure up?

I was thinking of getting dead aim because although it isn't a mainstream resident evil, the gameplay is similar to 4. Maybe import the other 2 from the survivor series only because they look like fun lightgun games rather than decent resident evil games.

The outbreak ones didn't look so good. And code veronica doesn't seem to really involve umbrella so I'm more inclined to skip it... Am i wrong? Are they decent?

Code Veronica actually talks about the origins of Umbrella and the reasons the mansion for the first one was made. I actually picked it up and finished it last year and was pretty happy with the game over all. I would pick it up.

The one Resident Evil game that EVERYONE should avoid at all times is Resident Evil: Survivor for the PS1...The game is just...bad...that is all I can say, its just bad.

The Gun Survivor games really aren't very good, but it's kinda fun to play them because you can see a lot of inspiration for re4 in them. Besides those the only one I can think of to skip is Zero. That one just didn't do anything for me.

So you like RE4 and you're going to look past RE2's bad graphics because it has Leon? Sorry to break this to you, but Leon in RE2 is nothing like he was in 4, and thank god. Turning him into some highly trained, grimly faced, cunt melting, action hero was a downgrade as far as I'm concerned. I much prefer the Rookie Cop. Also, completely different voice actor.

yeah.... that is why i picked it up and am willing to look past the graphics..... so... no need to break anything to me moz. I do like the better voice acting in re4, but the bad acting is pretty amusing at times. I can't say that i prefer the grizzled super cop cliche that leon turned into exactly, but i am interested in the back story that made him that way. The character arc is interesting, and it'll be more interesting if they change him again in an additional game. And before you reply with "they won't. gaming doesn't work that way blah blah blah latest trends" I know. It would just be nice to have him change up in every game. To have leon learn a little and grow. Plus, when i played 4 all the ada wong stuff was right over my head.

yeah- i think i'm going to avoid it. The wiki on the game says that they don't even name the main character. However, i did just get dead aim for the ps2 on ebay. I might eventually pick up survivor 2. Not so much for the RE factor, but just as a fun weird shooter.

i've had zero for a long long time and never played through it. It just kinda bored me, which booted me out of RE until i played a little bit of 4 at a buddy's house. I might skip it and come back to it later.

I'm a little surprised that people loved code veronica so much. I was even more surprised to realize that i actually already have it on the dreamcast. heh. When you buy game lots on ebay for 2 out of the 5ish games offered you start to loose track of the collection. I'll probably play some CV at some point.

I think I'm finally starting to get a handle on the resident evil universe. All the different viruses and stuff. It is kind of overwhelming to jump into late in the game.

Of all the major installments I think Resident Evil 3 is probably the one to avoid, it's not particularly bad, just a smaller update than the other games in the series.

On a slightly irrelevant note, you ought to try ot Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles when you're finished as it has a number of story line fillers etc. The same goes for the new movie, but that kinda of looks like rubbish. Also the Dino Crisis games are pretty good too, completely unrelated and with a different vibe but similiar mechanics.

Funny that you say that....
I actually picked up umbrella chronicles a while back and played through it a few times. Along with 4, it gave me a little sample of a slew of the resident evil universe without the crippling control scheme. I really like it. I didn't know it filled in holes though! When i do play through all the games i'll be sure to play through it as well. As for the movies... sadly... i've seen em all, even the new cg one. Not the best pieces of cinema, but fun.

Coincidentally, when i picked up RE:dead aim i also got the dino crisis light gun game from the same seller. Dino stalker i think it is called. I'm looking forward to it. I've always had a passing interest in dino crisis. Guns! Dinosaurs! what isn't to love? I know it isn't anything like the regular dino crisis games, but i'm hoping it'll get me excited for them. DC is on my long list of games to play.
