Will the cold hurt my games/systems in storage?

Post by 8bit »

Search on the forums and google did not result in any good information.

I recently had to put a ton of my collection into storage. Unfortunately it is not a climate controlled storage. Everything will only be there for the next 2-3 months and will come out before the heat of summer hits Texas. It doesn't get extremely cold here in Houston but do I have any high risk of damaging any games or systems with the cold temps of 28 degrees and above?

p.s. nothing is hard drive based so no concerns with that...

I think you have to worry about condensation!

Theres no water leaks or humidity there is it?

If the temp changes too much, the freezing and thawing is bad!

But your stuff is indoors so it may not be a big deal.

lets see what others have to say here.

The place is new and should be leak proof. Everything is off of the floor so water shouldn't be an issue either. We havnt had a freeze yet but there will probably be a couple before the end of the season. The humidity is fine this time of year and everything will be coming out by April so the real heat and humidity wont be an issue.

As long as you have things protected just in case water drips in they should be fine. Just let them come up to room temperature before using if you fetch them and it is still cool.

Just don't put them in regular cardboard boxes. I had mine taped and sealed in boxes and bugs ended up eating through the box and infesting everything inside! I now store everything in plastic, snappable containers.

With the place being new and there not being any leaks I don't think you have to worry about a light freeze like that. Not much air from the outside is going to be getting in so it likely won't freeze on the inside at all. To be safe you might want to insulate some of the stuff to give it a more constant temperature.

Thank you for the input guys. The place actually does bi-weekly pest control on site so that is nice. I will have to just keep an eye on everything by stopping by every few weeks and make sure the boxes look untouched.

I head that plastic can bubble in damp conditions but if you use the right containers it shouldn't be an issue.

You could put the games in moisture resistant bags if that's not logisitcally out of the question.

We live in a swamp, it is damp 95% of the time. :P
