Comfort Games
Re: Comfort Games
I know I mentioned a classic dos (and snes) game of Sim City, but another one I can cruise along with for hours is the original windows version of Civilization. Sickens me I can no longer run it. That one I almost always would use Babylon as I liked using the first civilization to crush the others.
Re: Comfort Games
DOSBox won't work? I thought Windows 3.1 actually worked on DOSBox. I'd give it a shot!
Re: Comfort Games
I couldn't think of any reason why Win 3.x wouldn't work since I know you can fire up Win98SE in it if you configure it right from what I read. I'd just have to setup the install(dosbox), configure it right, then find and download win 3.11 and install that too. Kind of a pain in the butt.
The thing is, second to that Sim City 2000 is nearly as relaxing, though I loathe the 50yr power plant explosions(so stupid.) It won't work in 64bit windows either, but I got fed up with that and earlier this year after failing on a few searches I found this one dude who brute force hacked the SC2k exe file and recoded a new one that works in 64bit windows so I can use my old SC2000 game CD again (skurk art won't run, but I never used it anyway.)

Re: Comfort Games
Wait sc2k won't run on dosbox in 64bit?
Re: Comfort Games
Yes SC2K DOS works in DOSBox, that's how they peddle it preconfigured from GoG.com. I just never liked the DOS version because it's clunky among other things and I had paid for the Windows version which I still have after all these years. I was just happy to be able to use it again thanks to someone else making a proper installer for it.

According to my opinion, comfort games are just those, which do not ask you show off something complicated. So I often play dress up games for relaxing.

Re: Comfort Games
I suppose I'll list a few:
Final Fantasy VI-X: Yeah, I was a rabid fanboy of these growing up. Having had the opportunity to expand my scope a bit, I realize these are of varying quality, but I just love them. As an only child growing up with one video game at a time, I essentially grew up in these worlds, and with these games. VI, VII, and X get the most attention here, but I would not protest a weekend spent on any of them.
Mega Man X: Played this game so much, probably more than any other game. Basically going through the motions at this point, but for some reason I've just never tired of it.
Bare Knuckle 3: Probably weird to some, but everything about this game just makes me smile. If I have a lot of shit going on in my head, this game drowns it out instantly, with its nice moveset, excellent action, and ridiculously good OST.
If I happen to have a friend along for the Comforting:
Toejam and Earl: Another game I just love to bits, the game is exciting every time I play it. I try to avoid solo play, just so that my next foray with a buddy is that much more exciting, but sometimes I just say screw it and hit that Random World. As soon as that funk starts playing, I am in heaven.
Diablo 3: I've always liked multiplayer RPGs, since Gauntlet and PSO hooked me years ago, and this is pretty much THE multiplayer RPG for my group now. Dozens of friends have their toons saved on my console, and whenever we have company this is pretty much guaranteed to be on at some point. Hit the level cap with the lady in the OG game, hit the higher cap with new characters once RoS came out, and we still play the game pretty regularly. Hardcore mode is where its at, so much tension when the punishment for failure is "Ooooh, you are actually DEAD". Love this game.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is something that I can sink a whole evening into and just forget about the world. I also like to play the earlier levels of Katamari Damacy and Super Mario Bros. 2 to unwind.
