Top 10! Very nice. ASOF and I both moved up a spot too, something to push past next year :)

Yeah, 3rd boss is where it picks up in this game. 1st (2) bosses just take a few runs and they become pretty easy, though random deaths will occur, this game begins to ramp up stage 3 and beyond.

Finally got around to this month's game -- no joke about what I said on the write up, it's Life Force meets R-Type for sure, and that's not a bad thing. I love me a good hori, and it has not disappointed yet.

I have to agree. I was doing just fine until that thing, and with no powerups to speak of, well we know how that goes. Looks to be the best thing is to take the 2 heads out in the front, and without any good weapons, just let the arms try and hang out on the 2 in the back.

Finally took down the 3rd boss. This game is crazy - first stage is cake, second stage is incredibly short - so short there are no checkpoints, and then the 3rd stage is basically chaos that turns into a boss-rush midway through. Stage 4 doesn't seem as hard as 3 in my one very limited experience there.

Stage 1: Pretty easy until the boss, for the boss, obviously avoid the red ball, do a full 1-second count in your head, and then move 1/2 an inch forward or backward. When possible, push forward or backward to center your shot on the boss's head, you should be able to take him down after the 6th ball he shoots out if you are getting direct (all 3 lazers combined) shots on his head steadily.

Stage 2: Stage itself is pretty easy, the strategy involves the boss and rather, not "powering up" for the boss. At the set of fins you'll get a yellow power up - don't grab it. After you blow off the tail section, there are a series of 4 powerups, grab all but the yellow. Grabbing the yellow is very powerful, but it takes away your blue seeker missiles. The 2nd boss is brutal if you don't have seekers - you can fight him 3-4 minutes w/o seekers to get a kill and your odds go way down and one death on him, means starting the level over completely w/zero power. Conversely, if you get to him w/seekers, it is just a matter of dodging the forward head rams and going back and forth away from the ball of light.

Stage 3: You'll start stage 3 center of the screen, back up slightly, (so about 10% of the screen is behind you and 90% in front of you) but do not waiver up or down. Stay steady right here and hold your auto-fire shot down. You should not get touched, your seekers will take out the stuff coming at you and your extensions will take out the mounds on top and bottom. Avoid grabbing the powerups, they are either above or below you and you will lose this safe position making the level much tougher. Once you hit the 3 heads, the only tough part here is navigating between them, it feels like you should be able to go lower than you can actually go w/o blowing up, so proceed through there cautiously. The first snake boss, try to center yourself inside as he curves around, you'll get a ton of up-close head shots and take him out faster, but it is tough to find the sweet spot in that circle. End boss, pick one of the 4 turrets to focus on and avoid the center, even though it gives you more time to react, your actually have to maneuver around 4 direct lazers.

Stage 4: Coming soon...

Good score, guy.

I gotta get back on this one; but I've been giving some love to my neglected fighting game collection.

X-Men vs. SF on Saturn FTW!

I am really shmupped out right now. I still want to give this a shot but need to hunt down a working ROM first. The fact that it's a hori isn't especially exciting me either....

It's a fun game - stages are quick and the graphics are just crazy, after all, you're a ship inside a parasite riddled human body.

Score can vary (and be improved upon) by simple getting everything on screen, which takes some time to master, so room for improvement even though you keep playing the same (3) stages in the beginning. I'd recommend the SAT version, it has Image Fight as well and kids love the characters in this game.

Minor score improvement:

1,074,300 - ondasteps - stage 4 - SAT-J

Finally got around to playing this today. Can't say I'm a fan, but now that I have played it again it's growing on me. I remember seeing this game in a bargain bin somewhere a long time ago so I bought it only because it was a shoot em up and it was dirt cheap. I played it once (when I bought it) and I probably didn't like it so I never played it again until today. I wish I had the Saturn version, only because all of my 5th generation console shoot em ups are on Saturn.

Anyhoo, this is my score after about an hour of play. I will be overseas for the latter part of the month, so I'll play as often as I can. Who knows, I may even see it in an arcade while I am out there. I don't do well playing shoot em ups with joysticks, so any arcade run will be horrid.

1,021,500 - hashiriya1 - Stage 4 - PSX-J

I can't really give any useful advice (mj did that already) other than I did a lot better keeping my homing missiles and not using any other weapon. The other weapons seemed kinda useless compared to the homing missiles. I am probably missing something and not using the other weapons correctly.
