Many people have said that.

It depends where you rate it.

Is it in the top 10 shmups, taking into account sprites, difficulty, scoring, boss fights, ingenuity...everything...probably not top 10, no. But likely in the top 25, which makes for a pretty damn good game, and imo, in the top 5 of what we'll play all year in this competition.

I meant "first" for the discussion this month. It is likely a top 25 shmup, no doubt, but I agree that I wouldn't rank it in the top 10 shmups of all time or even as the top Treasure shmup.

Which mode are we playing? I am playing Arcade mode. I'll start things off to get on the board. That 3-D boss is a doozy. I forgot his pattern. This game will come back to me. Those weapon bonuses help out a great deal, so be consistent with your weapon usage!

I definitely like that Toaplan feel of blasting shit, which stuff from Raizing and Cave manages to implement while still being complex. RS and Ikaruga forgo the blasting to go full complexity.

It would not make my top 10 either, but as of now I'd say its my favorite Treasure shooter. I always liked the "multiple weapons" idea, but thought stuff like TF did it pretty poorly.

One thing that's nice about thier games is; as hard as scoring can be, its usually pretty obvious how to go about it. Its more true in Ikaruga, but I found both games easier to get into for score. I really like this one and Mars Matrix for actually rewarding your scoring attempts with firepower.

I haven't played this in forever.

I used to think I was pretty good at it.

I looked at Hashiryas score.

I read where he said he hasn't played in awhile and can do much better.

I feel horribly depressed.

I didn't get that score on my first run! I wish. More like after an hour or so of playing and rage-resetting. Just get those chains and weapon bonuses. The "merry" dogs help, too. There are some other tricky things you can do, but hell if I know them.

Here is how to earn weapon bonuses:

Vulcan gun (A button): 200 hits
Homing laser (B button): 300 hits
Spread (C button): 16 direct hits (fires two, so get 8 direct hits, both bursts must land)
Homing Spead (A+B) : 10 seconds (can be stopped and spread out over more than one target, but don't change weapons)
Homing Missiles (B+C): 7.5 seconds all direct hits without changing weapons

Radiant Sword (A+B+C): 5 Seconds continuously on one enemy without changing weapons

Yeah, my scoring knowledge on this one is not great. I can see somethings, but not all.

I've seen some secrets pop up too, but not sure if the secret is the character i've killed, the order he was killed, the weapon that was used, etc.

I'm improving - as I recall I used to score in the 700K range, so even at that, I need to figure out a lot more scoring mechanics.

I'm hitting stage 4 steadily right now, but still haven't topped 400K - not good. I like to learn on my own, but that 2mil score has me feeling like I need to just read about it and go from there.

First impression: shit! This game's hard. Feels similar to Ikaruga of course. I can't make it very far yet, just getting the hang of everything. I feel like the ship moves a little slow. But it looks like a great game ultimately. And the music is pretty fucking awesome.
