Favorite: Snes, followed closely by the ps2, simply for the sheer number of titles worth playing on both. The snes wins out due to a combination of nostalgia and super mario rpg.

Least Favorite: Limited to consoles I actually own, I'd say the Colecovision. It could have been great if not for an AWFUL controller.

Favorite: N64. What's with all the N64 haters in this thread? I love this system! The controller has tons of buttons, I really like all the add-ons like the Expansion Pak and Controller Pak that are available, and it contains the best games Rare ever made. And it's one of the most affordable systems one can get in to. The most expensive non-special edition game you can buy is Conker, and that's only $40 or so. I think it's because a lot of people don't consider N64 to be "retro" or "collectible" yet, it's still just thought of as "old." Which is fine with me, it means I don't have to pay so much for my stuff. More for me.

Least Favorite: Wii. I didn't like the motion sensing stuff at all, it feels so gimmicky and unnecessary. A distinct lack of AAA "hardcore" action games. Besides the oft-mentioned No More Heroes and Madworld, there isn't very much available. And the Virtual Console ranks as the most under-delivered promise of this generation.

I chose the least favorite console I own, BTW. I would have picked the 2600 or some other pre-NES system, if I owned one. Or the Jaguar, or Pippin, or some other spectacular failure.

.
If I was going to defend the Wii's merits, those'd be the last titles I'd mention. In fairness, the vast majority of the Wii's best offerings include motion controls minimally and are mostly optional. Besides, what the Wii loses in quantity it compensates in quality. I mean, for every 20 brown&bloom titles that plops up on the HD consoles, the Wii gets a Muramasa, a TvC, a Fatal Frame 4, a Xenoblade Chronicles. I get it, the Wii wasn't designed with the 'core' gamer primarily in mind, but they're indulged highly every once in a while.

Out of those, I think only about 10% were exclusives. The existence of the Xbox has always been completely unnecessary -- it's just a box for games devoid of any creative personality whatsoever. Do you think that those games wouldn't have just ended up elsewhere if there wasn't such thing as the Xbox? All the brand does is needlessly fragment gaming's user base without offering anything substantial to the industry in return, with a corporate atmosphere that absolutely refuses to take a truly original chance on anything ever. Xbox Live is fine and all, but it's hard to give them great marks for that when SegaNet was around years prior. It's pretty well-documented (just ask Anthony817) that Microsoft aped alot from Sega in their early years, and while I'd rather have them ape Sega than anyone else, I don't think it's deserving of serious praise.

Again, they're not the worst consoles ever, but they've been the worst thing for gaming despite a handful of positive elements. Console gaming was much better off before Microsoft came and wrecked the party.
You got some very good points there. I feel that the original Xbox was a good console though. I got mine the year it came out, and it is still playing games like a champ. As a Mac user I don't have many choices for games, so I really enjoy my Xbox because of its variety of RPGs. My buddy and I grew up playing it so we have a ton nostalgia for the little black unit.

On the other hand the original Xbox 360 is a piece of crap. Pretty much all of my friends who had the original 360 had gotten RROD. I own a Xbox 360 slim and it's held up pretty good for me. The only reason I have the thing is that all my real life friends own one, and I love Gears of War and Halo.

This is the primary reason I refuse to buy a 360. I have friends who've bought 360's 2-3 times because they all got RROD. They loved the systems so they just kept getting new ones, but to me it just felt like Microsoft was purposefully making a faulty product. I get that it's hard to determine how long a system is going to last while you're developing one, but I felt it took them too long to fix it. I have no problem with the original Xbox, but I just can't bring myself to get a 360.

Little black unit? I've always thought of it more as a Big Black Beast

Indeed, I believe Shaft was one of its possible names.

How so? The only N console I really see much "hate" of is the N64. It's not really hate either, the N64 just truly lacks in content for most people (and in general, you can't really argue that). I see a lot of people who have listed the SNES as one of their favorites so I don't think it's a Nintendo hate bandwagon.

I think hating on the Wii appeals to many 'core' gamers' sense of contrairianism, where the prevailing logic is: popular=poor. It happened last gen with the PS2, although Nintendo have made it somewhat easier this time around, with last gen tech and extremely broad marketing. At least the PS2 was , yanno, the PS2. The only anti-Wii arguments that stand any grilling are the non-HD, no native HDD ones and underwhelming 3rd party support. The latter of which I lies on Nintendo completely, as they haven't the greatest history with it and the ones that have made it, regardless of quality, get dismiss based solely on the platform they appear on.
