Atari 7800 or ColecoVision
Atari 7800 or ColecoVision
Yeah, I know, this is unfair since the ColecoVision is much older, but I'm still deciding which to get. Which has the better library (in and of itself, since both also play 2600 games)? From looks, the 7800 has the better joystick. Which do you think I should get, and why? Or maybe an alternative? I'm mainly looking at quality early 80s games for a console, so no PC Engine or C64.

Yeah, PCE is on my list, but I'm going this way first. I know the 7800 only came out a year before the PCE, but the games looked back at the earlier 80s, while the PCE looked ahead. The PCE is more attractive, but more expensive, so really I'm just thinking between these two.

I would say 7800 for its backwards compatibility, better gamepad, and most of its games were arcade conversions from the early 80's, plus some originals that still had the same arcade feel, plus the Atari 7800 add on that came out this year from Legacy engineering. Also seems to be built better then colecovision.

I voted for 7800, but I think you'd be better off putting that money into either more games for systems you already have, or towards upgrading your PC if it could use it.

That's a very tough one. In all fairness, the 7800 was all ready to ship by 1984 but Jack Tramiel said "derp computers are the future" and then in 1987 it was knocked back to the stone age by the NES. That's why you'll see a lot of (c)1984 Atari on many of their older games.
Colecovision was well known for all its awesome arcade ports. Plus, with the special module package, you can play the Atari 2600 games on it.
The 7800 also has a few good arcade ports and that backwards compatibility with the 2600, but unless you can locate those special 7800 gamepads, your hand will be hurting with the "Pain-Line" joysticks. But, the 7800 has also a few good computer game ports such as Tower Toppler, and a lot more original ideas.
I also think the 7800 has more equipment and games that are readily available and easier to find.
I have a 7800 and I like it !

Re: Atari 7800 or ColecoVision
I have them both, and I'd recommend the 7800. Spend a few bucks and get the European game pad. The stick is ungodly bad. Granted, most 7800 games are lousy but it gives you access to the 2600 library.
If you want to go with something interesting, get a Famicom.

Never payed either one, but the 7800 has Ninja Golf. So go get that.
