While I was hoping for STGT this year (maybe next month?), this game can be a suitable replacement. Design cues of Raiden and several Toaplan games are easily seen here. Plus, it's not all that crazy difficult, so I had a good time with it so far. It's definitely a shmup for the 90s. No sound issues either.

Been a while since I've played this. I've never actually beaten it, but, judging by the number of bombs and extra lives it gives you, it should be doable. Then again, the extra lives may not help you much if you get stuck at a certain checkpoint...

For which system is it best: Saturn, PS1, or PS2? Also, why?

Saturn and PS2 play/score like the arcade game. PS1 apparently scores differently, and only has one loop as opposed to two.

Also, the music doesn't sound quite as good in the PS1 version.

Still leaves a PS2 v. Saturn. Any difference at all? I'll probably go Saturn if not.

not sure. From the Shmups Hi-Score thread I was under the impression Sat/PS2 is basically the same. I have the Sat version now. The only advantage to PS2 would be getting the sequel on the same disc.

The PS2 version is also much less expensive.

I haven't played this in a good minute....slowly getting back into Shienryu's groove. I like the sequel a bit better, but this is still a great game.

Am I allowed to gush on here?

I LOVE this game! I think it looks fantastic. So much background detail and amazing animations. Only thing I don't like about it is the relentless increase in rank.

I won't post a score until I'm over 4.5mil - just cleared 4 mil tonight after a handful of plays. Haven't touched it in months!
