unique beat em ups

Post by c_pokey »

honestly, i find most beat em ups to be too repetitive and dull. i was wondering if anyone could suggest some unique beat em ups. i know of games like Guardian Heroes, but i don't want to fart out 75-80 bucks just to play it.

I can't say I'm much help in this genre but...

Viewtiful Joe (GCN, PS2)
The Warriors (XBOX, PS2)
TMNT (GBA)
God Hand (PS2)

Sorry if you were looking for retro :| .

There honestly aren't a lot of beat-em-ups that I consider truly great. Mostly just the usual suspects; Double Dragon 2, Turtles in Time, SoR2, and not much else. It's a pretty cookie-cutter genre for the most part, though there's a certain level of lethargic enjoyment to be had in derivative stuff like Simpsons of Ninja Warriors.

River City Ransom is a little different. Some RPG elements thrown in that one.

Comix Zone
Battletoads

And if you prefer arcade emulation or hunting down cabs:

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom (saw a port on Saturn)
Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara (packed in with Tower of Doom on Saturn)
X-Men 6-player

battletoads is awesome.
D&D for saturn combines both arcade games but isn't cheap at 130 or so plus you'll need a ram cart (30 bucks) its worth it though
Guardian heroes is well worth it. Try importing its dirt cheap that way, about 30 bucks

I've always enjoyed TMNT 2-4. I guess it's just the novelty of a TMNT video game because I was always a fan of TMNT.

But yeah, really what I'm looking for are faster paced games. Battletoads has a steady pace even though it's ball-breakingly hard. Double Dragon and SoR are too slow for me.

You could try some of the 3D titles, like SpikeOut (arcade only) and Dynamite Deka 2 (Dynamite Cop 2)
