Five 2D Fighters You'd Take With You to Your Grave

by pierrot Mon May 13, 2019 11:40 pm

Fighting games seem to be a bit of a dead topic on these boards, but I was playing through some arcade modes not too long ago, and have been watching a few tournament matches of older games.

So to feed a bit of discussion on fighting games, what five 2D games are going with you when you leave?

I had to limit it to 2D fighting games, because it was too stressful for me otherwise. I'll get to my picks in a separate post.

Fighting games I’m taking to my grave so I can play them in the afterlife:

The King of Fighters XI
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Samurai Shodown II
Street Fighter II Turbo
Street Fighter Alpha 3

Fighting games I’m taking to my grave so no one else has to play them ever again:

Double Dragon V
Mortal Kombat 4
Shaw Fu
Street Combat
Time Killers

I lost interest in fighters years ago mostly because the genre seems to exclusively target competitive gamers now. It's all about ranked matches online and real life tournaments. These companies don't care about people who mostly play games for the single player experience. It's basically a tournament genre. I stopped caring once I realized that I was no longer the target audience.

I went through a phase many years ago when I was into fighters though, right around the time they initially became popular, and it was mostly the 2d ones. The ones I really like were:

Darkstalkers 3/Vampire Savior
X-Men vs Street Fighter
Mortal Kombat II
Red Earth
Street Fighter 2 - I love the simplicity of this one, compared to all of its overly complicated successors.

I'd throw in Battle Arena Toshinden 2 and Rival Schools if we added 3d fighters, maybe Tekken 3 as well

EDIT: If I could take any 2d, fighting game, soundtrack to my grave, it'd probably be any of the Guilty Gear games.

Yeah, I used to be big in the genre, but after I collected all of the SNES fighters and played through nearly all of them, I just didn't see much reason to keep going. I moved away from modern console games to more classic around the start of this decade, and now that I've transitioned over to PC games mostly, this genre just doesn't get much love from me anymore.

If I had to pick some to take with me though, I'd probably go with the following:

World Heroes
Marvel vs. Capcom
King of Fighters '98
Samurai Shodown II
Gundam Wing: Endless Duel

I love 2D fighters, but I rarely play them. Online play is too fraught with connection issues and skill issues (I don't have much skill), and single-player runs out of steam too quickly for me, despite how much I love the genre. But I can definitely identify 5 titles that would be entombed with me.

Capcom vs SNK
Street Fighter II' / Champion Edition
The King of Fighters 98
Pocket Fighter
Samurai Shodown

These games represent not the best of their respective niches, but rather are those for which I have immense nostalgia and would immediately feel comfortable playing over and over and over. I have fond memories of all these games and none of them lack playability or sufficient depth.

I don’t either. I’ll have to buy a cabinet and save up for a mausoleum. :D

Also...when are you jumping into the bar games thread? I recall seeing a post with the SNES fighting classic Battle Blaze, which I almost included on my list of games to take to the grave.
