Let's talk about your NEO GEO collecting + PRICE GUIDES

Post by mjmjr25 »

Greetings,

After a brief search it appears we have quite a few technical threads and a couple "is this a good deal" and a few more yet "how do I move this big red" type of threads, but nothing quite dedicated to talking about the collecting of Neo Geo titles.

Things to do in this thread:
-Show off your most recent finds
-Discuss what platform you like and why
-Show your display of Neo related items
-Ask for pricing help
-Ask for "boot or no boot" help
-Discuss the multiple Neo display and storage options
-Discuss and show your setup; elaborate on what type of CMVS and unibios you have, or what region your AES is and what mods you've done, or your NGPC backlight solutions

Things to post about in other threads, or otherwise create new threads:
-Technical help
-Individual game strategy
-Neo Geo X and related questions

EDIT: Adding some fan price guides

PRICE GUIDES (This is my own guide; taking into account ebay sales, forum sales, and existing guides from Xian Xi and Neo-Geo Kult; it is by no means a be-all-end-all, these are meant as observed sales to provide a baseline for your own purchases)

AES PRICE GUIDE (mjmjr25; racketboy forums)
-This is not an authority, but rather a guide
-A guide should be used to provide a general price baseline
-Condition / Completeness and number of items on the current market may tilt numbers up or down
-Prices are based on an average of sales
-Games w/o an accurate baseline are listed currently as NA
-Not all box and print variants are accounted for - buy wisely
-I've notated many games commonly converted - as a general rule, any game with a value of $300+ drastically increases the likelihood of conversion or bootleg - please do research to help you spot the signs, where possible
-Sales/Listings were observed on Neo Geo, Shmups and to lesser extent - KLOV/Arcade-Otaku Forums as well as ebay US and UK. Ebay France was also used but only as last resort as prices and sales seem to be quite a bit higher than US sales and this is intended as a North American buyer's guide. Minimal, but some, research was done on yahoo japan.

Re: Let's talk about your NG MVS / AES / CD & NGPC collectin

Post by BoneSnapDeez »

I have an affinity for Neo Geo stuff, which is a bit odd because I mainly play JRPGs and there really aren't many on the Neo systems.

I currently have a Japanese AES, Japanese NGCD, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and yes, the Neo Geo X. I only own 20 games for all 4 systems combined, however. I don't plan to ever "collect" any of this stuff, as an overwhelmingly large portion will always be out of my price range, but there are a few things I've had my eye on. I'd like to snag a few more cheap(ish) AES/NGCD titles and then focus mostly on the Pocket Color. Eventually I'd also like to get a MVS-to-AES converter, at which point I'll probably completely abandon AES carts and start buying MVS stuff.

Favorite games so far: Magician Lord and Samurai Shodown RPG.

Hmm, at the cost of converter (Deadaelus does around $300, Phantoms do around $200) and the cost of your Console (condition / region unknown, but safe to say $250 range) your looking at about $500. Have you considered saving on the converter, selling your AES and just getting a mid to high-end CMVS for the same cost?

EDIT, you did say JP AES, so yeah, around $250.

I currently have an AES - unsure of origin country; set to European bios.
I have about 19 titles, my most recent acquisition being 8Man; and all are US versions.

I have a NGPC w/about 12 titles; I got it about 2 years ago, collected for it a short time, and now it's kinda neglected.

I have a CIB US NGCD with about 30 or so different titles.

Now I'm looking to make a foray into the MVS realm, mostly because it will make titles like Metal Slug, Garou, and other great games much more affordable to me.

Interesting - the AES all being US titles, is that by design or just what you've stumbled upon in your area? US titles in many cases are significantly more pricey than the already pricey JP titles.

Yes and no. It mostly had to do with the availibility in my area, but also being as how I try to obtain the US versions in my other collections, I think I may try to maintain this trend.

I don't think I'd ever sell my AES, I'm a hardware/console collector just as much as I am a game collector.

I think my master plan is to collect every decent AES title I can get for $50 or less, and then switch to MVS exclusively.

The only one I own is the Neo Geo Pocket Color. The other systems and games on those systems are pretty much out of my price range for collecting for. I love SNK, though. To make up for it I have SNK Arcade Classics and the Metal Slug Anthology. And I have my eye out for Samurai Shodown Anthology whenever I'm on the hunt.

I love the hardware of the Neo Geo Pocket Color. It feels quite solid, and I love the clicky joystick. But I do wish it had a larger library of games. My entire collection consists of the following, and it's pretty much all I want (besides the overpriced Mega Man game that I'll probably never get, and I might get the Neo 21 card game if I ever come across it cheap):

-Bust-A-Move Pocket
-Dark Arms: Beast Buster 1999 (One strange duck)
-Fatal Fury: First Contact
-King of Fighters: R-2
-Metal Slug: 1st Mission
-Metal Slug: 2nd Mission
-Pac-Man
-Samurai Shodown 2: Pocket Fighting Series
-SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium (Best fighting game on the system)
-Sonic Pocket Adventure (Best game on the system, period, IMO.)

And no, I don't want the card-battle games. Never was into Magic the Gathering, Pokémon cards, or anything like that.

I see, as a console collector, maybe consider the Omega or Analogue Interactive CMVS's as opposed to the converter. Both are selling well enough and have high-quality production values they are about as close to official as you get while still being unofficial

Omega CMVS, $300 dyi kit, or $500 fully assembled:

Analogue Interactive Walnut / Ash / Custom Wood CMVS $659 and up:

Neotropolis CMVS; $659-709 (often on ebay for best offer):

Jamma Nation X (Xian Xi) sells occasionally on neo forums and ebay:

That's a pretty decent set of games, BurningDoom. Dark Arms and the Metal Slug titles are at the top of my want list. I'd also like to check out the Evolution game too, but it's gonna be trickier to find (JP/PAL only).

And holy crap I didn't even realize there was a Mega Man game on a Neo system. Neat.

mjmjr25 - So that's what the Omega system is! I spotted one at PAX East (I think it had a $500 price tag on it). The place was so crowded and busy though that I didn't bother to ask the vendor what it was. Thanks for the info, I'll look into these.
