Arcade Cabs: Prototype and Urban Legends Released

I thought this would be an interesting thread. Prototype Arcade Cabs seen in movies, posted as pics or blogs that were never released. Not looking for updated remakes of older games here, but working homebrew versions of prototypes. If you know of an Urban Arcade Legend please share with your review and or download homebrew link. Even home console games that are a myth brought to life by a fan made homebrew. Feel free to include wish list, maybe someone else may know of a home brew version.

I have downloaded and played these, both play beautiful!
The defaults of Mame controls are easily adjusted.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Tron - SPACE PARANOIDS Arcade

Who hasn't seen this movie?
There is a remake due out soon.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tron_(film)

Image

As seen in the movie, this is Flynn's Arcade tank game.
Tank controlled by stick, and turret controlled by trakball.

Image

The Twinstick version:
http://www.roguesynapse.com/games/space_paranoids/cab_pics.swf

5 = Coin
1 = Start
SPACE = Fire
ARROW KEYS = Tank Movement
A and S = Turret Controls
W = Centers Turret

At the startup Title screen, START FIRE START FIRE brings up a hidden configuration menu. From there you can change various settings. Shoot the Recognizers before they squash you! A tank rat in a maze type game, approximating the movie Arcade cabinet. Now if a way to emulate that trakball to the gun turret.

ImageImage

This resembles a PS1 oldie, Assault Rigs.
Various screenshots of another version.

There is also the browser version, needs the Unity Web player:

Last Starfighter - STARFIGHTER Arcade

A movie for the Arcade kid in all of us. I wrote a review of the flick here:
http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=303447#p303447

Computer animation created with a Cray X-MP.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Starfighter
http://www.mutantreviewers.com/rlaststarfighter.html

Image

In the movie, Arcade Cabinets were placed to recruit the best Starfighter pilots. The huge Arcade cabinet portrayed featured graphics ahead of any current Arcade of the day. A unique twinstick function for a space flight FPS type of game.

Image

This Home Brew is very special! Game boots up as an actual Arcade rom. First the video alignment grid pattern, followed by The Last Starfighter logo. Be patient, each screen takes around ten seconds, just like powering up a real Arcade cab. The next screen shows a chip-ok test screen just like Mortal Kombat boot rom screen. Finally, the game title appears. The anouncement greeting is Robert Preston's voice.

"Greetings Starfighter. You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada."

You gotta be kidding! The actor ROBERT PRESTON! Just like the arcade in the movie! The orchestral music, laser sounds, voices and graphics are all there. Remember when in the movie the Arcade demo kicked on, seemed haunted with Preston's voice distorted? Almost like a direct call from the Alien world. Its all there, let the game just go thru its demo paces, a wonderful screen saver.

Image

Before starting your game press 0 for a very extensive setup menu. The menu can only be accessed from the opening title screen. You can change levels, screen settings, weapon drain rate and customize the controls. A modded Arcade controller is just begging to be hooked up to this. Make sure you turn the mouse/trakball on, great for operating that center aiming target. Warning! First level is a practice screen, very difficult to hit anything. Just play with the controls till you get to the second asteroid screen. When the game starts, you get the opening screen Gunstar rocket blasting off just like the movie. Fly around locating the enemy with the HUD rotating radar displays. Once an enemy is in your front view, fine tune the mouse/trakball targeting cursor. This is a great Star Wars inspired Arcade game that was never released, now an Arcade right in your PC. Unbelievably exact duplicate of the Arcade cab in the movie!

PC WIN XP Game:

Here is my default controls:

0 = Menu
5 = Coin
1 = Start
SPACE = Fire
ARROW KEYS = Movement
MOUSE or TRAKBALL = Target
RETURN = Select Weapon
SHIFT CTRL ALT Z = Various Weapons

Calling all Starfighter Pilots!

-------------------------------------------------------------

Okay still on the hunt for the hidden graphics of CLOAK AND DAGGER (not Agent X) from movie of the same name. Its on a 5200 cart somewhere waiting to be homebrewed into an Arcade. :wink:

Heard of any Urban Arcade Legends? Please post yours.
A review and if there is one, a homebrew download link.

I was thinking about The Last Starfighter a couple of days ago. I saw it in theaters as a kid. :D

When I saw the phrase "Urban Legends" I immediately thought of Polybius. I don't think this one needs any explanation. We've all heard stories about this notorious arcade game.

I remember POLYBIUS. I could only get the title screen and then a black screen of death. I may have to give it another go.

Sam, Déjà vu?
http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=227239#p227239

The color strobe code:
35-34-31-54-12-24-45-43

A Polybius page, interesting links.
Crappy "Blair Witch" video included.

EDIT
Okay got it to work! Entering code, will post review if my brain doesn't fry. :lol:

Yeah, I think maybe I see the government conspiracy. :?

Video clip of LAST STAR FIGHTER ARCADE, pretty impressive.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoFFTvNW47Y&NR=1

That's Music Man actor Robert Preston voiceover in the game, sadly his last theater movie appearance.

I have the Arcade running in demo mode on the other computer as I type this. Damn! there is a lot put into this arcade reproduction! Orchestral music kicking in now, I'm gonna have to try the level planner.

The replica Cabinet under construction.

Replica built for the documentary Crossing the Frontier: The Making Of The Last Starfighter
I can't own the rare cab, may just have to get the 25th anniversary DVD to see this in action.

Last Starfighter FAQ.
http://www.rookscastle.com/videos/laststar.html
Q: WAS THERE REALLY AN ARCADE GAME?
Yes and No. In the spring of 1995 I called Atari Games on an unrelated matter (trying to find an old instruction manual for an arcade game) and asked the same question. The representative I talked to said that the game was created, and test marketed in a limited fashion, but never went into mass production, largely because of the glut in movie related games at the time, and the fact that Atari had lost a great deal of money paying licensing fees for their previous movie related games (Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones/Temple of Doom...). Around this time, Atari was also losing millions because of "The Crash" of the home gaming market, so that may have been an additional nail in Starfighter's coffin.

There was talk about using a modified Star Wars controller.
It would need a 4 axis setup incorporated for movement and target.

Okay, I set the color strobe effect to on in POLYBIUS. As far as I know, I don't think the subliminal messages have affected me. :lol: How does that go? Only the crazy deny being crazy? Turned on Randomize Levels function. Chose Enemy 2 and Game Rotation to ship to help the frames per second. Changed controls to a Keyboard-Mame friendly setup and saved. To keep with tradition ZAXXON Arcade controller deployed. :D

There are all kinds of settings to adjust dealing with different emotional states in the game. :shock:

Image

Preliminary Setup (If you don't have a fast computer)
Before running game, first go to subfolder "/arrays".
Click "display re.EXE".
Choose 640x480x16 by inputing 1, and press Return.
If your computer can handle it, kick the default 800x600x16 all the way up to 1280x1024x32. :D

Game Controls
0
= Menu
5 = Coin
1 = Start
SPACE or CTRL = Fire
ARROW Keys = Movement

Shoot the floating green square with number 8 at the bottom right to match the 8s located in the center circles.
Watch for a 5 to appear. Avoid the enemy shot paralyzing blue plasma at the top right.

Image

Gameplay
A "String Art" or "Spirograph" Star Castle is at the center of the screen. Control the ship GYRUSS-TEMPEST style and shoot geometric shapes drifting out. You can fly in and out as in STAR CASTLE. Whenever a shape with a number appears, you can collect it to charge your shields or shoot it to send it back in. Idea of the game is shoot a matching floating number to number in the Star Castle. You can also reduce the center numbers if the floating one is a square root divisible. Once you clear a level is where the fun begins. Same gameplay in further levels but now obscured by a random "70's Blacklight animated screen" A lotta different strobe effects.

Just like LAST STARFIGHTER just let the game run thru its demo paces.

Another interesting screensaver, this time in animated physcadelic 70's blacklight poster style.

Wow... I stumbled on this in my Stitcher feed and expected it to be a short series on the myth itself. We've all likely heard of the black cabinet that hurt children and was checked by Men in Black. It has become part of pop culture from the Simpsons mall arcade to a NIN/Jeff Minter music video (I mentioned in a RB thread here).

Instead this team dives in from a journalistic point of view. I had no idea there was a man in Portland who claimed to be part of the Polybius experiment back in 1981. They even find a reporter who wrote on this arcade in question back in the time-frame. After looping her in ~35 years later is where it starts getting weird.

No spoilers here in OP, but keep listening... by the conclusion of episode 2, you'll think Bobby is perhaps a little nutty. By the end of episode 3 there are some very strange coincidences coming from three or four different parties and deep dive sources. These share some odd similarities to his story and the overall lore :shock: . Is Bobby crazy.... maybe. Is there something weird going on with this subject... maybe. Give it a listen, make it to the end of E3. I am cranking up E4 right now (which is already showing in Stitcher app, but not not on the site yet). I have no idea how E4 will change my perception or if there will be an E5 but it's been a fun ride so far!

Obligatory warning.

A very nice Arcade cabinet. Have the movie on laser disc, may have to get that DVD to see the cab in action.
I wish the target mouse control could be set to instant response, as in Atari 5200 Galaxian.

Anyone downloaded the Last Starfighter game?

A video of POLYBIUS in action, very informative.

Update
Got the movie The Last Starfighter, did a review here:
http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=7221&p=303447#p303447

The Replica Arcade Cabinet running in all its glory, shame a demonstration wasn't shown.

-----------------------------------------------

A Cray X-MP was used for all the CGI for scenes and in the Arcade original mockup.
Amazing thing is that monster was only rated at 105Mhz. Download at the OP.
The cushions came in handy for marathon coding session cat naps.
