Monsters of Geek Podcast

Post by AaronC »

Hi Everyone!

I've been member of this forum for a little bit and I'm more of a lurker than poster. I enjoy reading the thoughts and opinions on both modern and retro games and this forum has helped me in both playing games and collecting as well. I've been wanting to do this for a while, but I'm always a little intimidated promoting things I'm involved with on the internet, but I am part of a podcast called Monsters of Geek. We also have a blog, but have really transitioned into a podcast as our main medium and we are approaching 50 episodes. We don't have a big listener base, but I feel like the podcast has improved so much since we first started a little over a year ago. We started out with around 40 or so listeners, but due to life we dropped off after a little bit of a break and we haven't been able to gain a lot of listeners since. I know in the big podcasting landscape it's a bit hard to get noticed without 1) spending money or 2) strong word of mouth. I've done some of #1, but I don't have ton of extra money to spend. I wanted to focus this next year promoting the podcast in hopes of creating more word of mouth promotion.

With that being said, I don't expect anyone to go back and listen to all 50 episodes haha! Staring in January we are going to be deleting the majority of our older episodes. Think of those episodes as Season 1 with Season 2 staring in January. We will keep some of our older episodes up, but not many so please feel free to listen to as many as you want until I take the down.

Also, I want to take this time to get your opinion on the show. Please feel free to give us tips or things we need to work on for the new season. Our format has changed a bit since that first episode, but we generally start with a cold open, we talk about what we have been into since last recording, and then we have a topic we discuss for the remainder of the episode. Our episodes cover anything in geek culture (movies, comics, TV, etc.), but we do talk a lot about video games due to all of use being gamers. We record over Google Hangouts as we have a 5 member show and we can't get together in the same room to record. This holds up pretty good, but we have our moments in terms of audio quality. If anyone has any tips on how to get the audio better and cleaner I'll be happy to take that advice and run with it. We have a lot of fun and I hope that comes across in the each episode. Any feedback on the show would be much appreciated.

Finally, feel free to move or delete this if I'm breaking any rules. I didn't know whether to put this here or in the creative part of the forum. I appreciate this forum and how much information I've gained from it. With our 50th episode coming up, I would like to get some questions from listeners and start a Q&A section of the show. Please feel free to send your questions to monstersofgeek@gmail.com, tweet us @monstersofgeek, or join our Facebook page under Monsters of Geek Blog (same on Youtube as well though we don't have a lot of content up yet). I will leave links to the latest episode on Spreaker (where we host) which is our Super Mario Super Top 10 show! I will also provide links if you want to subscribe to us on iTunes and Stitcher as well. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you start to listen to us and enjoy our show.

Hey Everyone!

I want to think everyone that has given us a listen! Our last episode had 30 listeners which is our best to date! A lot of that has to do with you guys and this awesome forum allowing me to post about our show. It is very much appreciated and means a lot to me and the my co-hosts as well. You guys rock!

If you have any subjects you would like us to cover or anything you would like to see us improve on feel free to respond in this thread. As you may have already noticed we have kind of went to an episode a month format. At this point it's the best for all of us as we have families, jobs, and real life stuff. This episode was actually recorded in mid-March and I'm just now getting time to get it up. Thank you for your patience.

Also, I know this thread is for the podcast, but we do have a blog. We don't do too may written pieces anymore, but I'm trying to change that this year. We actually have a lot of past content that you may find interesting, but we don't have a ton of new stuff. I will also be posting new pieces from the blog when they go up. I hope you enjoy those as well!

And I hope you enjoy our 50th Episode! We will probably go to "Season 2" type of reboot with the next episode with a new #1. So this is a our Season 1 finale so to speak.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

We made it to Episode #50!

Daniel opens with the perks (and awkwardness) of wearing a badge and his Mass Effect Andromina journey. Yeti tells us what he has been watching on the picture box and the latest installment of the King Slayer Chronicles (No Spoilers). Jarred talks about introducing his daughters to Minecraft and their struggles with older games along with what movies he’s watched since last episode. And Aaron starts to put a stop to his “Never Finishes Video Games” reputation and how the Nintendo Switch is helping him do so.

Then the Monsters jump in to their main top of geek goals for 2018! What do they want to accomplish in their geek lives in 2018 and what older piece of geek culture are they finally going to complete after all these years.

Hope you enjoy! Don't forget to like us here on Spreaker. And subscribe and leave reviews on iTunes and Stitcher!

After the squad was lost in the time space continuum, they are back with the second episode of Season 2!

The guys play catch up on what geek stuff they have been consuming. Aaron and Andrew tell us of their adventures web-slinging through NYC in the PS4 exclusive, Spider-Man! Jarred tells us, about his European vacation (sans Chevy Chase and National Lampoon), Daniel tells us about all that virtual Platinum Trophy bling he has been collecting, and Aaron dies a lot in The Messenger for the Nintendo Switch!

The guys move on to our main topic as they discuss what they are looking forward to most in Q4 of this year! What games, movies, and other geeky gems has got them excited about the end of 2018? Listen to find out!

Thank you so much for listening! I want to apologize for not seeing this earlier. Life has been real busy lately hence the long gap between episodes haha!

In terms of suggestions:

Find something you are passionate about and build from there. If you don't like what you are talking about the audience will notice. Don't get frustrated if you aren't getting listens and downloads. It takes a lot of patience. Make a Twitter and FB page and really work on hashtags on both to maybe pull in some more listeners. You can pay FB as well, but I've never done anything like that. I've heard mixed reviews on it, but maybe someone else that has may be able to help more with that. Get you some friends to do it with you. One of the big reasons I started this was to get together with some of my best friends I don't get to see a lot. We have a good time and I hope that comes across on the show. We are essentially just hanging out and so happen to be recording it haha!

In terms of actual recording, I just use Google Hangout Air and download the video then just rip the audio into Garageband. I used to try and do separate tracks, but it seemed like something always went wrong. If you have decent internet connection the sound off Hangout is actually pretty good. I do have a board I started out with, but once we started doing Hangout as our primary recording method I haven't used if for quite sometime. I just bought a bigger house so it will be getting more use now that I can have everyone over to record a live episode every so often. If you do choose to do a board just make sure it fits your budget, it has enough microphone inputs, and it has a USB output so you can record to a computer. I use Garageband, but Audacity is a good free one if you use a PC. I use a V-Moda headphones with their mic extension add-on and it sounds great. No complaints on it.

Hope that helps a little bit. Again, my apologies for the just now seeing this. Hopefully you are still listening and liking the show haha!
