What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I know I said I'd finish MOHAA-RS last night, but I keep getting new other games to work on. Started Rainbow Six 3 today and somehow made it through the first 2 missions. I'm liking this team-based play style so far.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I plan to play through all/most of this gen and last gen's 007 games in November, and am getting a head start today with the newest Goldeneye release (PS3). I am likely going to blog about it over on RFGen, but I'll update things here...
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Got a little more into RS3 last night -- the mission where it was just me (Ding) & the German guy Weber was a little tough, but I love the wide range of weapons and accessories to choose from. The P90 reminded me of Far Cry, where that was a great weapon too.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
When I first playing The Darkness II, I was a bit let down by certain things. I never gave the Vendetta mode a shot though, as I didn't expect much from a mode thrown in as the multi-player component of the game (since it allows co op play unlike the main campaign).
On a whim, I started playing it solo about a day ago as I was bored and haven't really had anything to play on my 360 since finishing Sleeping Dogs. I'm happy to say that it actually does legitimately feel like an extra campaign mode with extra story elements and even its own boss fights including its own unique final boss.
One nice thing about Vendetta mode is that the story is more diluted. There are no cutscenes, hub areas, etc. All of the story is delivered in game via dialog. It's the Half Life 2 approach where they don't pull you out of the game. Also, I like that each of the characters have abilities that Jackie doesn't have in the main story mode. In fact, Vendetta mode addresses some of my gripes with the main campaign. I always felt that Jackie was nerfed in the main campaign. The awesome black hole ability from the first game can only be used by Jackie randomly in the main campaign. Also, they massively cut back on the number of darklings Jackie has to help him from the first Darkness game. Going from four to one, even though one of the bosses (who is not nearly as adept with using The Darkness as Jackie Estacado) repeatedly sends multiple darklings at you
In Vendetta mode, one character can use the black hole ability at will. Another character can send four darklings to attack enemies when he has that ability fully upgraded. Even the badass gun execution moves from the first game that they took out of Jackie's arsenal in this one are in Vendetta mode if you play as the Shoshanna character. It's like they took some of Jackie's signature abilities away from him and threw them into Vendetta mode. There are even unique darkness powers and weapons in Vendetta mode that Jackie can't use in the main story.
The voice clips from the four playable characters are a nice touch. Some are eye rollingly cheesy and some are very funny. The characters are generally more "chatty" than Jackie is. My character of choice was the weird voodoo guy with the levitation power and black hole ability. His lines are all hilarious, as is his execution move. Vendetta feels more campy than the main campaign, which can be considered good or bad. The best part is all the extra dialog and moments you get with support characters from Jackie's main story campaign. They get fleshed out more here.
Vendetta has some serious difficulty spikes though, probably due to me playing it solo. Some parts are so tough you have to resort to exploiting AI flaws to survive like finding magic spots where they inexplicably can't see you or get to you. The fights seem so ridiculously rigged against you in some parts you have to play cheap, and that's on the default Hitman difficulty. I didn't play on Don difficulty(no achievement for it so I didn't bother). Overall though, Vendetta mode is kind of fun. Doesn't change my overall feeling about The Darkness II as a bit of a dissappointing sequel though, but the game does some things right.
To anyone who hasn't played or bought the game yet and have heard how short the main campaign is, I can't stress this enough. The main campaign in The Darkness II is only HALF of the game. Even after you finish Vendett'a campaign mode, there is STILL hit list missions to play, hidden relics to find that are unique to Vendetta mode, and the task of maxing your character upgrades for all four characters. Some of the upgrades are co op specific, as are some of the available hit missions, giving you a little something extra to get out of the game if you have a buddy. I like that the game has zero co op achievements though, making co op just an added luxury you can indulge in with someone or ignore.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Playing through Killzone HD right now
Guerilla did a nice job at upscaling the textures and fixing a lot of the PS2 version's technical issues, like choppy frame-rate and repetitive enemy dialogue. The AI seems slighty better, as well. But there are still times when the frame-rate will drop a bit, the enemy will yell "They've got me pinned down!" more than once or twice, brief mid-level pauses for loading (like in Killzone 2), and also times where you will shoot the enemy and watch them fire in the other direction.
Despite these flaws, the game still looks and plays much better than the original release on the PS2. I know there's some pissed off fans out there that Guerilla ditched the online modes with this re-release. But myself, all I ever cared about was the single-player campaign. I think it has one of the best campaigns that I've ever played in an fps.
With the extra coat of paint and a lot of the glitches ironed out, I think KZ1 may finally be better than the first Halo (as it was originally billed as being a 'Halo Killer.' But it's still nowhere near as solid as Halo 2. I'd also argue that Black on the PS2 and oXbox still looks and plays better by comparison.

Agreed, the PS2 never had the muscle for fps games. I was surprised how Urban Chaos: Riot Response had actual ragdoll physics, but it was a late title. Black is still an entertaining shooter at any rate.Weekend_Warrior wrote: With the extra coat of paint and a lot of the glitches ironed out, I think KZ1 may finally be better than the first Halo (as it was originally billed as being a 'Halo Killer.' Had no idea an HD remake existed. But yikes at saying it's "nowhere near Halo 2", can't stand that one. It's always a drag to replay and I always end up having to really push myself to finish it (thus I rarely replay it). 3 hasn't aged very well either to me. I think the original was the best by far. Sure it's got repeating corridors everywhere, but it's always been my favorite. Pretty stoked for Halo 4, hopefully it brings back the mysteriousness of the first game that made it so great.

It's part of the Killzone Collection that Sony released recently without telling anyone. Includes the original game in HD, KZ2, and KZ3 + DLC IIRC.Xeogred wrote:Had no idea an HD remake existed.
I love these collections Sony's putting out for late adopters, but I really don't know why they're being so quiet about them. I never know about them until I suddenly see them on the shelf.

I'm really enjoying RS3, and its spin on the traditional FPS. Apparently the Gamecube got quite a few of these games as well as other FPS and non-FPS spinoffs from the Tom Clancy series. I guess I know what I'll be getting next

Goldeneye Reloaded is pretty decent so far, but I am usually a heavy grenade user and the fact that there aren't any in this game (at least so far) is driving me mad!
