Wasn't the dash by default mapped to a face button next to the jump button? I think that's what I used to use, and double tap on the d pad when on the ground. Course, you could also jump and air dash if you had that move available.
I don't recall ever needing the shoulder buttons for any dash function, but every player is different. Now, if you're playing a modern game like Smelter, shoulder button is the only option they give you, that's a choice by the developers
