Damn Mozgus,
I haven't seen you around here for a minute. Did you come back just to freak us out?

It sounds like you took every reasonable precaution to avoid this. How are you recovering while typing messages on this forum?

Damn Moz, that sucks! I've never even thought of this sort of thing happening. I wonder how many other PC gamers have had this kind of problem.

This got me thinking about how I could prevent this in myself, so I searched and found this article.

I hope you recover well. For now you have a good Frankenhand halloween costume though.

How did health insurance play into this? If you're covered, you're covered, but were you asked "how did it happen"?

Guys, I said this was over a year ago. It's recovered as much as it's going to. I paid $2600, and insurance paid $8000 something. Saw 2 doctors, then 2 hand specialists, had an MRI, then got to the surgeon. Not a one of them had ever seen this kind of thing before, nor did any of them seem to care enough to tell me why it happened. It was only once I started searching online did I find that this has happened to some other fellow nerds across the country.

Other than that I'm pretty sure you can use some program to externally emulate a mouse with a gamepad or a analog joystick, whatever works for you (with a gamepad you are probably used to control directions with the left-hand which I guess helps). I'm not 100% sure but I think Xpadder allows this type of thing. You likely won't be "competitive" in real time games but it can be ok for single player ones, and on turn-based ones it will work regardless.

I'm well versed with xpadder. I've tried my best to force some games like Dragon Age to work with it, but it's really not a substitute for some genres. I don't know why Bioware forcefully removes controller support from all their games. Dicks.

BoringSupreez wrote:I'm sorry to hear about this. How well do gamepads work for you? Can you play indefinitely, or does it eventually start hurting?

I have no real issue with gamepads, except sometimes with the 360 pad my pinky will start cramping up on it's own. Very odd. I switched to a ps3 controller with bluetooth dongle and emulated a 360 input with it. Good stuff.

That and I'm only getting rustier as time goes on with FPS games by not playing as much.

Again, I'm as recovered as I ever will be, but you can see below I have to keep something really soft ahead of a keyboard. I got a gel rest but it was still too hard and only made things worse. Here's what it looks like today, over a year later. It's very bizarre too, because sometimes even the slightest touch to the scar can feel like I'm being stabbed. Nerve damage is freaky.

I've taken other precautions too in life, like I stopped using the arm rests in my car, and I sold my PC chair that had arm rests, in favor of one that's just a seat and back rest.

Thanks for the kind words though guys. I just figured this would be an interesting thing to share after a long while.

Tell me about it. :|

I had a hernia two years ago myself, had the surgery done and everything but it still feels weird since they had to mess around with nerves and crap apparently.

That's funny you mention this. I opted for a chair without arm rests mostly because I was tired of bashing them into the desk. I also drive less then I used to, so less arm rest usage there. I wonder if I inadvertently helped myself out.

Same here. I've never had a desk job in my life. Didn't do me much good.

I've been glued to a computer desk since I was about 4 or 5. I haven't gotten any wrist/artery damage, but I bet it's partially responsible for my chronic spine/neck pain.

That really sucks though. Stock up on painkillers for those all-night sessions maybe?

That royally sucks. I'm sorry you are unable to play the way you used to. Does the injury affect your ability to drive or grip things effectively? I know it's a wrist injury, but with the nerve damage...wonder if it has anything to do with your hand cramps on 360 controllers.
